The Philadelphia Wings are a National Lacrosse League (NLL) franchise owned by Comcast Spectacor that began play in the 2018-19 season at the Wells Fargo Center. The team’s name and visual identity were introduced on November 29, 2017, following a fan vote that selected “Wings” over “Fire” and “Founders” from more than 7,000 name submissions. The franchise name honors Philadelphia’s earlier indoor lacrosse teams, which competed from 1986 through 2014 before relocating to New England. [1]
Design and History
Comcast Spectacor partnered with GOBI Advertising of Haddonfield, New Jersey, to design the team’s logo. [1] According to Lindsey Masciangelo, Executive Director of Business Operations, the goal was to make the look “feel fresh, but also pay homage to the history of indoor lacrosse in Philadelphia.” [2]
The primary logo takes the shape of a “W,” a throwback to the marks used by the previous Wings franchise, though slightly refreshed. [3] The design incorporates the letter “P” on either side of the “W,” with four feathers extending from the “P,” a deliberate nod to the logo of the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers, Comcast Spectacor’s other professional sports franchise. [3]
The color scheme uses red, gold and charcoal, a combination that no other NLL team possessed at the time of the launch. [2] The “P” on the side of the uniform, representing Philadelphia, serves as a secondary logo and was described as a connection to the Flyers. [2]
The team’s first home jersey, revealed in June 2018, was black with the Wings logo on the front, charcoal wings on the shoulders, gold-outlined numbers on the back and red on the inseams. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “W” shape directly references the visual identity of the earlier Philadelphia Wings franchises, preserving continuity with the city’s indoor lacrosse history. [3] The four feathers attached to the “P” elements were designed as a visual connection to the Philadelphia Flyers logo, which itself features a winged “P.” [3] The team’s official announcement described the “P” as representing Philadelphia and serving as a link to the Flyers, both teams being under Comcast Spectacor ownership.
