Raptors 905 is the NBA G League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors, based in Mississauga, Ontario. The franchise was announced on June 29, 2015, as the 19th NBA D-League team, owned and operated by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which also owns the Toronto Raptors.[1]
Design and History
The Raptors 905 name and primary logo were unveiled together when the franchise was announced in June 2015. The logo features “Raptors 905” written inside a basketball, with three claw marks at the top of the ball, similar to the Toronto Raptors’ new team logo introduced for the 2015-16 NBA season. The colors of black, silver, and red are identical to those of the parent club.[2]
The trademark filed by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment describes the mark as the stylized words “RAPTORS 905” together with the stylized design of a basketball and claw, all appearing within a circle.[3]
The visual connection to the parent club is intentional. The Toronto Raptors had unveiled their own new primary logo in December 2014, a circular shield with a ball torn by the attack of a Raptor, designed by the creative services agency Sid Lee.[4] The Raptors 905 crest adopted a closely related circular basketball-and-claw construction, creating an immediate visual link between the NBA team and its development affiliate.
In November 2015, Raptors 905 unveiled its inaugural uniforms, which featured a large stylized “905” across the chest in silver, black, and white on red and white uniforms. The team also introduced a special alternate logo paying tribute to Mississauga, showing a red map of the city with a white “M” featuring a claw rip down the middle.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The most distinctive element of the Raptors 905 identity is the number “905.” According to the team’s official FAQ, the 905 is the area code used for the Greater Toronto Area surrounding Toronto, including Mississauga, where the team is based. The name was chosen to pay homage to the region and the rapid growth of Toronto’s suburbs.[6]
The inclusion of the parent club’s moniker links the two teams and keeps an identity on the Raptors brand, as the team explains in its official FAQ.[6] The claw motif provides another visual connection to Toronto, echoing the Raptors’ primary logo depicting a basketball marked by a raptor’s attack.[7]
The primary crest has remained in use since the team’s inaugural season, with the regional identifier “905” serving as one of the most prominent elements of the mark alongside the Raptors name.
