The Rhode Island Rams are the athletic teams of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island. The school’s visual identity centers on a split “RI” monogram as the primary logo, supplemented by a ram head mark introduced in 2022. The official colors are Keaney blue, navy blue, and white.
Design and History
The University of Rhode Island adopted the Ram as its official mascot and nickname in 1923, chosen as a tribute to the school’s agricultural history. The mascot made its first appearance in 1929.[1] The live ram mascot was eventually replaced by “Rhody the Ram,” a costumed character who serves as the official mascot at athletic events.[2]
Rhode Island Athletics maintains a formal brand guide that governs the use of official colors, athletic logos, wordmarks, and typography. The department states that these identifiers are a visual representation of the brand and that adherence to the guidelines ensures consistency and recognition.[3]
In February 2022, Rhode Island Athletics unveiled a new “Ram Head” secondary logo. The mark was developed over roughly eight months with the help of Summit Athletic Media and was designed as an intimidating, forward-facing ram head.[4] The new logo features a straight-on image of a ram with large horns, described as a more menacing look than the previous logo, which depicted a side view of the animal’s head.[5]
As part of the same branding project, the primary split “RI” monogram was updated to offer a true divided look featuring Keaney blue and navy, along with a thicker white stroke.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The new Ram Head secondary logo stays true to the colors of the interlocking “RI” logo: navy blue on the right side of the face transitions into the classic Keaney blue in the middle, with the left side all white.[4] The ram imagery itself traces back to the 1923 mascot selection, which honored the university’s agricultural heritage.[5]
The school’s colors are light blue, officially referred to as “Keaney blue,” white, and navy blue.[1] The Keaney blue name honors Frank Keaney, who served as the school’s head basketball, football, and baseball coach in the 1920s before becoming athletic director.[7]
Typography and Design
Rhode Island Athletics’ brand guide details the use of official athletic logos, wordmarks, and typography, establishing the visual standards for all applications of the marks.[3] The department prohibits any alteration of its trademarks and logos, requiring all uses to comply with the brand guidelines.[3]
