The Citadel Bulldogs are the intercollegiate athletic teams of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, in Charleston. The teams compete in the Southern Conference at the NCAA Division I level, with football competing in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).[1] The official athletics colors are Infantry Blue (PMS 542), Flag Blue (PMS 295) and White.[1]
Design and History
The Citadel’s athletics visual identity was comprehensively refreshed in 2021 after a months-long process that included input from more than 300 stakeholders, including current and former cadet-athletes, donors and alumni, gathered through 22 information sessions.[2] The project was developed with the help of Joe Bosack & Company, a strategic brand-building firm that specializes in sports and entertainment.[2]
The new primary athletics mark is a block C logo with a five-pointed star in the middle.[2] The curvature of the C represents the college’s Spanish Moorish architecture, and the mark uses Infantry Blue.[2] The star is a symbol of patriotism, the armed forces and cadet academic excellence.[2]
The refresh also introduced a three-quarter profile bulldog logo, designed from a portrait of the college’s live mascot, G3 (short for General III).[2] To make the bulldog unique to The Citadel, he wears a full-dress uniform collar.[2] The bulldog logo is distinct from The Citadel mascot, which was completed separately in late 2021.[2]
Prior to the 2021 update, the primary athletics logo had been in use since 1987.[3] An earlier mark, first seen in 1969, featured a leaping bulldog on a block C with stacked “The Citadel” text.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2021 brand refresh was driven by stakeholder feedback that the athletics visual identity had become inconsistent and indistinguishable from other college bulldog mascots.[2] Participants emphasized that the artwork should be bold and simple, immediately legible and recognizable, as well as traditional and timeless.[2] They also requested emphasis on The Citadel’s iconic “infantry blue,” a strong tie to the Corps of Cadets, and a bulldog that is tenacious, fierce and strong rather than cartoonish.[2]
The Bulldogs nickname dates back to 1905, when a local newspaper said the football team “played hard and showed a lot of tenacity, like a bulldog.”[5] The first recorded live bulldog mascot began appearing at home football games in 1928.[6]
Typography and Design
The 2021 refresh included a new athletics wordmark in sans-serif typography, described by the college as “art, rather than a font,” inspired by the military vehicles stationed around the parade ground.[2] A separate baseball script was inspired by uniforms worn by The Citadel’s 1990 baseball team that competed in the College World Series.[2]
The new brand elements were approved by The Citadel Board of Visitors and were expected to be fully integrated across uniforms and equipment over a two-to-three-year period as replacements were needed.[2]
