SKN St. Pölten, officially Sportklub Niederösterreich St. Pölten, is an Austrian football club based in the Lower Austrian capital. The club was founded on 6 July 2000 after the dissolution of its predecessor clubs FCN St. Pölten and VSE St. Pölten [1]. The team is nicknamed “die Wölfe” (the wolves), a reference to the wolf in the club’s emblem and in the city’s coat of arms [2]. The club’s traditional colors are blue, yellow and red [3].
Design and History
In January 2019, the club, then competing in the Austrian Bundesliga, presented a new visual identity alongside a naming partnership with the mobile provider spusu. The club was renamed spusu SKN St. Pölten, and the sponsor was integrated into the club crest [4]. General Manager Andreas Blumauer explained that the club created a “composite logo” to allow partners to be integrated into the club logo without losing the club’s own identity. He stated: “We have broken up the static contours and placed the wolf even more strongly as the defining element of the club in a dynamic and modern form. We have not forgotten our roots and integrated them optimally into the new design” [5].
The 2019 redesign drew criticism from supporters. The fan club “Wolfbrigade 04” publicly objected, stating that the new logo “may be hip and modern” but was “definitely unacceptable as a club crest.” The fan club noted that the previous crest contained elements of the old VSE crest, which carried nearly 100 years of St. Pölten football history, including the wolf and the stripes [6].
In September 2022, after the sponsorship agreement with spusu ended prematurely, the club, now competing in the Austrian 2. Liga, introduced a new logo for the 2022/23 season [7]. The wolf’s head remained a prominent element of the club’s identity, appearing on the club’s Nike kits for that season [8].
Meaning and Symbolism
The wolf is the central symbol of the club’s identity. The club is nicknamed “die Wölfe” because of the wolf in its emblem, a symbol shared with the city of St. Pölten, whose coat of arms also features a wolf [2]. The wolf motif has been a consistent element across the club’s visual identities, including the 2019 composite logo where it was placed “as the defining element of the club in a dynamic and modern form” [5].
