Musical.ly was a lip-sync and short-form music video app launched in July 2014 by co-founders Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang, with a strong presence in the United States before its acquisition by ByteDance.[1] The app’s visual identity centered on a bright pink logo that became widely familiar to its teenage user base before the brand was retired in August 2018, when Musical.ly was merged into TikTok.[2]
Design and History
The Musical.ly logo featured a letter “M” designed to resemble sound waves.[3] The mark was presented on a pink background, a color scheme that users recognized as the app’s signature look.[2] Some descriptions of the icon also characterize it as a red circle containing a white wavy line resembling a music note.[4]
In April 2015, the company made a significant branding decision that affected how the logo was used. When users shared Musical.ly videos to other social networks, the logo was being cropped out of the frame. The company repositioned the logo within the video content and added the user’s username, making the branding visible whenever a clip was shared elsewhere.[5] This change is credited with driving a surge in growth that led the app to the top of the App Store in July 2015.[1]
ByteDance acquired Musical.ly in November 2017 for an estimated $800 million to $1 billion.[6] In August 2018, the two platforms were merged into a single service under the TikTok name, and ByteDance did not retain any of the Musical.ly branding.[3] Users who updated the Musical.ly app found the familiar pink logo replaced by the TikTok musical note icon.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The core symbol of the Musical.ly logo combined the brand’s initial with an audio-related visual cue. The letter “M” was shaped to evoke sound waves, directly communicating the app’s focus on music and audio content.[3] The pink color of the logo was a defining element of the app’s identity, and the similarity between the pink in the Musical.ly logo and the pink accent in the later TikTok logo has been described as coincidental.[3]
