The South Carolina State Bulldogs are the intercollegiate athletic teams of South Carolina State University, a historically Black public university in Orangeburg, South Carolina. The university’s athletics identity is built around the Bulldog mascot and the official garnet and blue color palette. SC State fields 16 NCAA Division I sports, with all teams competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) except women’s soccer.[1]
Design and History
South Carolina State University maintains several Board of Trustees-approved visual marks, including a circular name brand logo, the official seal, the strutting Bulldog and a block letter “S.”[2] The strutting Bulldog is designated for informal, student or alumni-related communications and materials produced by the Department of Athletics and/or the University Bookstore.[3] One additional approved version combines the Bulldog with the SC State block letter “S.”[2]
The university’s brand guidelines prohibit altering the mark, moving its individual elements, distorting its proportions or reproducing it in unauthorized colors.[3] SC State owns all rights to its logos and trademarks, which are administered through the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC).[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Bulldog serves as the central athletic identifier for South Carolina State. Official branding materials consistently use the strutting Bulldog as the primary athletics mark, but they do not assign specific abstract qualities such as tenacity or fighting spirit to the animal. Those interpretations should be treated as general mascot associations rather than documented design intent.
SC State’s official colors are garnet and blue.[5] The official colors for the Bulldog logo, both separate and in conjunction with the “S,” are PMS 202 (garnet), PMS 294 (blue) and black, or in black and white.[5] The colors function as established identifiers of the university rather than carrying officially documented meanings. SC State reinforces them directly in athletics culture, including game-day promotions built around garnet, blue and white fan sections.[1]
Typography and Design
The SC State athletics identity relies primarily on mascot and letterform graphics rather than a single elaborate crest. The Block “S” Bulldog mark combines a large collegiate-style letter with the Bulldog mascot, creating a compact identifier used across uniforms, merchandise and athletic communications.[2] The university’s brand standards emphasize consistency rather than continual redesign, requiring that official marks retain their approved proportions, placement and colors.[3]
No authoritative public source reviewed identifies a specific designer or design agency for the current athletics Bulldog marks, nor does the university document a precise date for the introduction of the current versions. Those details should not be attributed without stronger evidence.
