The Southern Arkansas Muleriders athletic identity centers on one of college athletics’ most distinctive mascot names, rooted in the school’s agricultural heritage in Magnolia, Arkansas. The current athletic logo, registered as a trademark by Southern Arkansas University, depicts a rider on a bucking mule framed by a mule shoe.[1]
Design and History
The Mulerider name dates to 1912, when football players from the Third District Agricultural School rode mules to their coach’s home after a Thanksgiving game. Coach George Ruford Turrentine greeted them with the words “My Mule Riders,” the first known use of the name for the team.[2] The name was not adopted officially until 1922-23, when the school yearbook became The Mulerider and the student newspaper The Bray.[2]
The visual symbol evolved gradually. A mule logo appeared on the masthead of The Bray; later the logo became a rider on a mule. In 1949-50, the logo took on the appearance of a Western bronco-breaking rider astride a bucking mule.[3] According to the university’s archives, for more than sixty years the logo of the Muleriders, first appearing on the masthead of The Bray, has been a graphic of a rider in Western garb atop a wildly bucking mule.[2]
The current athletic logo was the subject of a trademark application filed February 8, 2012, with the mark described as “a rider on a bucking mule framed by a mule shoe.”[1] The trademark remains registered and renewed as of March 2022.[1]
The university maintains separate trademark protections for its word marks and logos. MULERIDER and MULERIDERS must always be followed by the registered symbol, while the university’s logos must be accompanied by the trademark symbol.[4] The Mulerider mascot is intended only for athletic or student activity uses.[4] The Collegiate Licensing Company serves as SAU’s official brand management partner for licensed reproduction of its logos.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The mule symbol carries deep regional meaning. The mule was a crucial element of Southern agriculture, preferred over the horse for being more intelligent, more stubborn, healthier, stronger, and more sure-footed. Because only poor farmers were likely to ride mules rather than horses, the choice of Muleriders as a symbol represented both an assertion of superiority and of status inversion for a school that provided educational opportunities primarily for the sons and daughters of farmers and workers of Southwest Arkansas.[2]
The name has remained in use across the school’s four institutional identities: the Third District Agricultural School, Magnolia A&M College, Southern State College, and Southern Arkansas University.[2] Over the symbol’s hundred-year history, the original two-word name was changed to the compound “Muleriders” to accommodate evolving style usages.[2]
Typography and Design
Southern Arkansas’s official school colors are Royal Blue and Gold. Athletics game notes list the colors as Royal Blue (PMS 293) and Gold.[6] A separate flag reference notes that the university’s style guide specifies Pantone 287 for blue and Pantone 110 for yellow-gold, and that the colors were selected in 2013 to use a brighter blue and gold.[7] The designer or agency behind the current Mulerider athletic logo has not been publicly documented.
