The University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) Tritons compete in NCAA Division II as members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The athletic department’s visual identity centers on Louie the Triton, a mascot mark that became the primary athletic logo in February 2025.
Design and History
UMSL’s athletic teams were informally known as the “Rivermen” from 1965, a nickname that emerged from a student contest but was never formally adopted. In the fall of 2006, Chancellor Tom George charged a committee of students, faculty, staff and alumni with identifying a new nickname. With the assistance of a creative firm, the committee selected “Tritons,” which was formally adopted by the University of Missouri Board of Curators in May 2007.[1]
The Triton mascot itself was first revealed in January 2010 at a “Pack the Stands” night. The mascot was named Louie at the annual Mirthday celebration in spring 2010 after a student-wide vote.[1]
On February 27, 2025, UMSL Athletics unveiled a new Louie logo at a pep rally prior to a basketball doubleheader against Drury. The new mark, created by Design Consultant/Illustrator W. Scott Matthews, became the new primary athletic logo.[2] Matthews is co-founder of the St. Louis-based creative agency Tremendousness.[3]
According to UMSL Athletic Director Lori Sheilley, the previous identity relied solely on a trident mark, and the department “really needed something else.”[3] The 2025 Louie mark was updated to better reflect the university’s “determined athletic spirit.”[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
Louie the Triton takes his form from the red-spotted hellbender, a semiaquatic salamander native to the Mississippi and Missouri rivers near St. Louis. The trident carried by Louie references Triton, the messenger of the sea in Greek mythology, whose father Poseidon wielded the three-pronged spear. In Greek, Roman and Hindu mythology, the trident is said to have the power to control the sea. For Louie, the trident serves as a nod to his river home and as a symbol of power that unites the Tritons to victory.[1]
Typography and Design
The UMSL athletic identity includes a trident mark and a wordmark in addition to the Louie mascot logo. The university’s logomark is built using the Compacta typeface, though the university explicitly prohibits using Compacta for typesetting in print or digital documents.[5]
The official athletics color palette includes UMSL Athletics Red (Pantone 1807c, HEX b5121b) and Triton Gold (Pantone 124c, HEX eaab00).[4] The preferred treatment of the university logotype is Triton Red and Black over an open, white background.[5]
