UCAM Murcia CB, officially UCAM Universidad Católica de Murcia Club de Baloncesto, S.A.D., is a professional basketball club based in Murcia, Spain. Its visual identity is inseparable from that of its parent institution, the Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia (UCAM), which acquired the club in 2013.
Design and History
The club’s current crest dates to 2013, when UCAM acquired CB Murcia. The change was radical: the previous badge was red and round, while the new one is blue and shaped like a genealogical shield ending in a point. It is the same emblem that represents UCAM in its other sporting activities, with the addition of the text “CB Murcia.”[1]
The shield features the Archangel Saint Michael (Arcángel San Miguel), the same symbol worn by UCAM footballers.[2] The university’s corporate identity manual confirms that the Archangel San Miguel functions as the UCAM isotipo (symbol) used across its sports programs.[3]
In 2025, the club celebrated its 40th anniversary with a commemorative logo. The anniversary emblem appeared on a limited-edition jersey, placed on the chest, and was also paired with the coat of arms of the Region of Murcia on the back collar of the team’s first kit for the 2025-26 season.[4][5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The crest’s blue color is the identifying color of UCAM. When the club introduced its 2013 kits, the third jersey was dark blue, described at the time as “the color that identifies UCAM.”[1] The Archangel San Miguel is the central figurative element of the university’s sports identity.[2]
While the club’s team colors are documented as blue, golden and red,[6] the crest itself is rendered in blue with the Archangel in gold on a navy background, as seen in official UCAM merchandise.[7]
Typography and Design
The UCAM corporate identity manual documents the university’s logo system, which includes the UCAM logotype, the shield (escudo), and the Archangel San Miguel isotipo used across sports applications.[3] The club’s crest follows this established university design system rather than a standalone basketball-specific mark.
In 2024, the club began a visual refresh focused on its jerseys rather than the crest itself. Working with Nike and Sports Emotion, the club introduced kits where the shield was finished with satin bertex and set against a background with a floral paniculata pattern, a nod to the huerta (market garden) tradition of Murcia.[8] The creative direction behind the club’s recent visual campaigns has been credited to Juan Pablo Mendoza, who led design work on special editions such as the marble, white, Randy Owens Edition and City Edition jerseys.[9]
