The USC Upstate Spartans are the athletic teams of the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The athletics program’s visual identity centers on the “U-Upstate” primary mark, a stylized letter “U” in green with black trim, which has been the department’s primary logo since 2011. In May 2025, USC Upstate Athletics unveiled a brand refresh that added a new Spartan helmet spirit mark as a secondary identity while preserving the existing primary logo and wordmarks. [1]
Design and History
The current identity traces its roots to 2004, when the institution changed its name from USC Spartanburg to USC Upstate and its athletic nickname from the Rifles to the Spartans. The “Upstate” and “Spartans” wordmarks have been in use since that rebranding. [1] A Spartan helmet logo was also introduced in 2004 during the same transition. [2]
Following the name change, two nearly identical marks, the “U-Upstate” and “U-Spartans,” were used almost interchangeably as primary logos for years. In April 2021, the athletic department released its first Brand Standard Guide, standardizing all marks into one document. Effective immediately, the “U-Upstate” mark became the exclusive primary athletics mark, and the “U-Spartans” mark was discontinued. The Spartan helmet remained as the department’s secondary mark but was locked up with the “Upstate” wordmark to strengthen brand recognition. [3]
In May 2025, after a nearly yearlong research and development process, USC Upstate Athletics unveiled a brand refresh featuring a new Spartan helmet spirit mark. The refresh was driven by confusion between the former helmet logo and other Spartan icons, particularly Michigan State’s, especially when depicted in green. [1] The new mark was developed in partnership with Zilligen Design Studio, led by designer CJ Zilligen. [1] The “U-Upstate” mark remains the department’s primary mark, with the new spirit mark serving as the secondary identity. [1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2025 Spartan helmet spirit mark incorporates several elements tied to South Carolina identity. The Spartan is positioned to mirror the outline of the state of South Carolina in its facial features. Within the helmet, the white faceguard fastener doubles as the crescent moon from the South Carolina state flag, and its location in the upper-left quadrant mimics Spartanburg’s geographic position within the state. [1]
The spirit mark uses the same color palette as the “U-Upstate” primary mark, balancing green, black and white for a seamless transition within the existing brand identity. The design’s dynamic linework suggests forward motion, and the helmet’s wearer is intentionally ambiguous, incorporating both masculine and feminine qualities. [1]
Typography and Design
The 2025 brand refresh introduced a new official typography family, “Sporty Pro,” for tertiary marks and related graphics. The font may be sheared at 16 degrees, the same angle used in the dynamic motion of the “U-Upstate” primary mark and existing wordmarks. [1]
