The Virginia Cavaliers are the athletic teams of the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville. The program’s primary visual identity centers on the V-Sabre, a mark featuring a large “V” above two crossed sabres. The university’s official athletics brand site describes the V-Sabre as the primary logo of Virginia Athletics, noting that it has embodied the energy and strength of the program since its inception. [1]

Design and History

The V-Sabre was conceived in 1994. According to a 2009 Roanoke Times retrospective, the logo was commissioned by football coaches George Welsh and Bill Dooley and designed by Matt Welsh, George Welsh’s son. The article notes that Welsh received no compensation for designing the mark, which he later turned into an online business venture, thesabre.com. [2] A 2002 Sports Business Journal report similarly states that the crossed-sabres logo was used by the UVA football team since 1994, when it was designed by one of former coach George Welsh’s sons. [3]

Before the V-Sabre, UVA’s official athletic logo was a “serious-looking Cavalier head,” in use since 1984. In February 1995, the university announced it was replacing that mark, which licensing director Steven Heon said did not sell well. [4] In April 1995, the school unveiled four new graphic designs, including a redesigned Cavalier wielding a saber on a rearing horse and designs featuring a hat and feather. At that time, the new logos were used for souvenir sales only, and sports teams were not required to change their uniforms. [5]

In April 2020, UVA introduced a new brand identity developed by Nike’s Global Identity Group (GIG) over an 18-month collaborative process. The V-Sabre remained the primary mark, with enhancements including a beveling effect added to the middle of the V and to the sabres, slight adjustments to the width of the V and length of the sabres, and detail added to the sabre grips that mimicked the design of the serpentine walls found on Grounds. The refresh also added two new secondary marks, a revised color scheme, and new typography, numerals, and patterns. [6]

Just under two months later, on June 15, 2020, athletics director Carla Williams announced changes to the new V-Sabre and Cavalier Shield logos. The curved handles added to the sabres were removed after Williams was made aware of the negative connotation between the serpentine walls and slavery. The original eight-foot-high walls, built in the 1820s, were constructed to mask the institution of slavery and enslaved laborers from public view. All other aspects of the logos remained the same, with the sabre handles returning to straight lines. [7]

Meaning and Symbolism

The “Cavaliers” nickname traces to a 1923 contest held by the student newspaper College Topics to choose an official alma mater and fight song. Although the winning fight song, “The Cavalier Song,” did not become part of university tradition, it inspired the nickname “Cavaliers.” [8]

The 2020 brand refresh introduced a new secondary mark, the Cavalier Shield, inspired by a coat of arms design and the V-Sabre. The top of the shield contains the outline of the University’s Rotunda, designed by Thomas Jefferson, and the hat in the center is that worn by the Cavalier mascot. [6] The official brand site describes the Cavalier figure as an inclusive symbol representing all members of the University community. [1]

Typography and Design

The 2020 identity system introduced a custom typeface called Cavalier Type, designed for use within the Virginia Athletics brand system. Nike constructed the typography using straight lines and circles found in the original design documents of the Rotunda. [6] The official brand site notes that Cavalier Type uses a clean and modern design to unite all 27 varsity teams across Athletics. [1]

The official athletics colors are UVA Blue (HEX #232D4B, Pantone 2767C) and Cavalier Orange (HEX #F84C1E, Pantone 172 C). [1] Orange and blue were adopted as UVA’s official athletic colors at a mass student meeting in 1888, replacing silver gray and cardinal red, which did not stand out on muddy football fields. The colors were chosen after a student pulled a navy blue-and-orange scarf from the neck of athlete Allen Potts and waved it to the crowd. [8]
