North Carolina A&T Aggies is the athletic identity of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a public historically Black land-grant university in Greensboro, North Carolina. The teams compete under the nickname “Aggies,” a term long used for students at agricultural schools, which the institution adopted upon its founding in 1891. The physical representation of the athletic teams is a bulldog, known as Aggie, whose origins trace to oral history about a shepherd bulldog kept on the college farm to help herd cattle and other animals. According to that account, during a football game the dog was untied and attacked a referee after a disputed touchdown call, and from that day the football team’s mascot has been a bulldog. The earliest known costumed mascot at the university dates to the late 1970s, and the mascot’s appearance has been updated over the years while keeping the same basic concept. [1]
Design and History
On October 16, 2003, A&T unveiled a new logo in a ceremony at Aggie Stadium. The design features the head of the university’s bulldog mascot with a spiked chain, surrounded by the words “NC A&T Aggies.” The same unveiling introduced a newly redesigned interlocking A&T letter mark, a Baby Aggie youth mark, and various word marks. [2] [3]
The university’s official brand guidelines distinguish between the interlocking A&T letter mark and other athletic marks. The letter mark is designated for academic publications related to the literary, scholastic and technical aspects of the university, and it must not be used as a substitute for the letters “A&T.” [4] The interlocking A&T logo is a registered trademark of the university. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “Aggies” nickname connects the athletic identity to the university’s agricultural roots as a land-grant institution. Although the teams’ physical mascot is a bulldog, the term “Aggie” carries a historical connection to that agricultural mission. [6] The bulldog mascot itself, per the university’s oral tradition, is tied to the farm dog that once worked on the campus. [1]
Typography and Design
The university’s official brand colors are Aggie Blue and Aggie Gold. Aggie Blue is specified as PMS 288 with hex value #004684, and Aggie Gold is PMS 123 with hex value #fdb927. These are designated as the primary brand colors and must be reproduced using the official formulas rather than standard software conversion values. [7]
In 2023, the football program introduced new Nike uniforms that brought back the “Aggies” wordmark on the front of the jersey, a design element that had been a staple for many years. The update also included the team’s new conference logo on the jerseys. [8]
