Wagner Seahawks is the athletic identity of Wagner College, a private liberal arts college in Staten Island, New York. The program fields 23 NCAA Division I teams, with most competing in the Northeast Conference. The visual identity centers on a seahawk bird mark, a theme that has remained consistent for over four decades.
Design and History
The earliest documented Wagner Seahawks logo dates to 1981. That mark featured a single element: a solid green seahawk depicted in flight, poised as if attacking. The bird was decorated with bold, smooth white lines that added readability and light to the composition, and it appeared without any accompanying lettering or framing.[1]
The current logo, introduced in 2008, takes a different approach. It shows the side view of a hawk’s head in white with dark green trim. In the full version of the emblem, a double-lined wordmark appears below the bird. The word “Wagner” is set in larger white letters with green trim, while “Seahawks” appears smaller in green letters. The text is italicized to add a sense of motion.[1]
Wagner College maintains a separate institutional identity from its athletics marks. The college’s primary logo is a wordmark consisting solely of letterforms, and its official seal is explicitly designated as not a logo and restricted to formal occasions and documents.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The seahawk imagery connects directly to the Wagner College nickname, which has been used by the athletic program for decades. The 1981 mark depicted the bird in an aggressive, attacking posture, while the 2008 redesign shifted to a more stylized head profile.[1]
Wagner’s official athletics colors are green and white, a pairing referenced throughout the program’s materials, including game notes that refer to the “Green & White.”[3] The seahawk mascot’s specific color specifications are documented as PMS 3308 C green and PMS 4 C grey.[4]
Typography and Design
Wagner College’s visual identity guidelines identify Bauer Bodoni as the signature typeface of the institution. It is used in a special typesetting for the primary logo and tier II identity extension logos.[2] An earlier identity standards manual from 2009 similarly specified Bauer Bodoni Roman at 80% horizontal scale as the official logo font.[5]
For the college’s primary logo, the approved colors are Wagner green, Wagner gold, black, and white, with two-color versions (green and gold, or gold and white) preferred where possible.[2]
