The Washington Spirit is a professional women’s soccer team based in Washington, D.C., and an inaugural member of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The club was founded on November 21, 2012, and plays at Audi Field.[1] The team’s visual identity has undergone several distinct phases, from a patriotic torch-inspired crest to a simplified monochrome look, with a full rebrand announced for 2025.
Design and History
The Spirit’s first widely documented logo was unveiled in January 2013, ahead of the NWSL’s inaugural season. Designed by freelancer Pete Schwadel in collaboration with the Spirit front office, the new mark replaced an earlier design and was created over a few weeks of collaboration.[2][3] The 2013 logo shifted the team’s color scheme from royal blue to navy while retaining the symbolism originally desired by team owner Bill Lynch and founding staff members.[2]
In 2023, the club pivoted to a simplified look with a black, white and chrome color scheme.[1] The following year, the organization announced it was in the midst of a full rebrand set to debut in 2025, with the 2024 kits serving as a bridge to that new identity.[1] In 2024, the club also introduced vibrant yellow as one of its main colors, described as a nod to the club’s trailblazing spirit and a hint of the forthcoming new brand positioning.[1]
Under majority owner Michele Kang, who took full control of the team in 2022, the Spirit launched a visual rebrand of its crest and color scheme as part of a broader business transformation.[4] The club also brought on Domo Wells as its first creative director and merchandise designer in 2024, with Wells describing her priority as anchoring the team in its hometown of Washington, D.C.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2013 logo carried extensive documented symbolism. According to the club’s official announcement, the design was intended to resemble a torch, reflecting the notion of “Burning with Spirit.” The crown held 11 stars representing the players on the field, while a ball with a single star represented the 12th player, the fans, placed where the fuel for the torch would be. The club described this element with the phrase “Our Fans Fuel the Spirit.” The logo also included both “Washington” and “DC” to link the team with the District and the greater Washington metropolitan area. The entire mark was wrapped in what the club called the “Banner of Spirit,” described as a patriotic theme honoring the flag.[2][3]
The club also released a social avatar derived from the logo, featuring the talons of an eagle grasping a soccer ball.[2]
Typography and Design
Documented details about the typography of the current Spirit crest are limited. The club’s official brand assets include a “Spirit Main Crest” and an “Official Color Guide,” indicating a structured brand system, though specific typeface information has not been publicly documented in available sources.[6]
In 2024, the club’s core collection merchandise incorporated the D.C. city skyline into the team’s shield, in a design named “Ribbon in the Sky,” inspired by the Stevie Wonder song.[5] This represented a merchandise-specific treatment rather than a change to the primary crest.
