Western Illinois University’s athletic teams compete as the Leathernecks, a nickname derived from the U.S. Marine Corps. The university is the only non-military institution officially permitted to use the Marine Corps’ nickname, seal and bulldog mascot, a distinction granted in 1927 when athletic director and coach Ray “Rock” Hanson, a Marine veteran of World War I, obtained permission from the U.S. Navy.[1] The athletics program uses purple and gold as its official colors, specified as PMS 2607 and PMS 116.[2]
Design and History
The central figure in Western Illinois athletics branding is Rocky the Bulldog, the costumed mascot whose lineage traces to a live English bulldog named “Colonel Rock” that first appeared at a homecoming football game in 1959. The name was chosen from over 200 contest entries to honor Hanson.[3] The costumed Rocky replaced the live dog in 1973 and received a significant visual update, or “grooming,” unveiled at a basketball game on February 15, 1997.[3]
The current primary athletics logo features a side view of the Rocky bulldog head above the wordmark “WESTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY,” with the “LEATHERNECKS” name set below.[4] In 2019, Western Illinois revised the typeface used for its wordmarks while retaining the same Rocky bulldog graphic.[5] The university maintains two sanctioned Rocky logo forms: the full-body mascot and the Rocky head, with the head usable alone when “Western Illinois” appears prominently elsewhere in a piece.[6]
University policy designates the bell tower logo and the “Western Illinois (Rocky) sweep” as the official marks for all academic and administrative units, while the athletics department uses the Rocky-based marks with the Leathernecks wordmark.[7] In April 2024, the university issued an April Fools’ announcement confirming it would not change its logo or mascot, reaffirming the Leathernecks identity.[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Leathernecks name references the leather collar historically worn by U.S. Marines, and the bulldog serves as the traditional mascot of the Marine Corps.[9] The university’s use of these symbols stems directly from Hanson’s military service and his effort to build an athletics tradition around the Marine ethic.[1] In June 2009, the university unified its women’s teams under the Leathernecks name, ending the previous “Westerwinds” designation for female athletes.[1]
Typography and Design
University brand guidelines specify that logos may be printed only in university purple (Pantone 2607) and gold (Pantone 116) or in black on non-color pieces, and that Rocky’s teeth and the whites of his eyes must remain white.[6] Rocky head logos must carry a trademark designation, and the logos may not be manipulated or altered in any way.[10]
