Oracle Corporation, the enterprise software and cloud infrastructure company, uses a typographic wordmark as its primary logo. The mark consists of the word “ORACLE” in stylized red lettering, with red claimed as a feature of the trademark registration.[1] Oracle’s official newsroom provides the current logo for media use, and the company’s brand architecture is managed by its internal Oracle Brand Creative team.[2][3]
Design and History
Oracle was founded in 1977, initially operating under the name Software Development Laboratories before adopting the Oracle name in 1982, derived from its flagship database product.[4] The company’s bright red wordmark became a defining element of its visual identity over many years.[5]
At Oracle OpenWorld in September 2019, the company unveiled a significant brand refresh. Founder and CEO Larry Ellison announced a new mission statement, and the company introduced what it called the “Redwood” brand identity.[6] The new identity featured a more diverse color palette, including an updated shade of Oracle Red, along with customized Oracle fonts, textures, illustrations and other visual elements.[6] The biggest change was the reduction of the bright-red hue that had long defined Oracle’s look.[5]
The letterforms of the wordmark itself remained unchanged in the 2019 refresh. The more notable visual change was the introduction of the “O” from the wordmark as a standalone visual symbol, which became a primary visual element alongside the wordmark and color.[4] The new red color was described as having reduced saturation compared with the previous bright red, which designers said gave the brand a warmer and more global visual appearance.[4]
The Redwood name was chosen deliberately. Oracle’s design team said they wanted something evocative of the redwood root system, which is collaborative and supports large living things, and that felt more organic and human. The name also referenced Oracle’s history and legacy: the company’s headquarters are in Redwood City, California, and the color red appears in the Oracle logo.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
Oracle’s brand identity architecture is built around the Oracle Red Badge, which serves as the foundation for logos across Oracle’s various programs and partner channels.[3] The company’s primary color palette consists of Oracle Red and Oracle Bark, with the Oracle Academy logo designed using both colors.[8]
In China, Oracle uses the brand name “Jia Gu Wen,” which refers to ancient Chinese oracle bone script. The name resonates with the local market because it was historically used for storing information and prophecy, attributes consistent with the Oracle brand.[4]
Typography and Design
Oracle’s brand identity features two official typeface families: Univers LT Std and Garamond 3 LT Std. According to Oracle’s brand guidelines, these typefaces visually reinforce the Oracle brand and are diverse enough to provide a range of visual options.[3][9] The 2019 Redwood refresh also introduced a customized Oracle font as part of the broader identity system.[6]
