Thermo Fisher Scientific is a global life sciences and laboratory products company headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts. Its corporate identity is built around a red wordmark that appears across its product portfolio, packaging, documentation and websites.
Design and History
Thermo Fisher Scientific was formed in November 2006 through the merger of Thermo Electron Corporation and Fisher Scientific International Inc. [1] The company’s visual identity is a typographic wordmark in red, a color that the company has used to align product branding across its many acquired brands. For example, when the Acros Organics, Alfa Aesar and Maybridge brands transitioned to the Thermo Scientific brand, the company stated that product caps would transition to red “in alignment with the overall theme of the Thermo Scientific brand.” [2]
Thermo Fisher’s brand architecture has undergone significant simplification since the merger. In July 2015, the company announced it was retiring the Life Technologies brand name and logo, and would begin updating logos on shipping materials, product packaging, documentation and websites. [3] Under this new structure, the Applied Biosystems, Invitrogen, Gibco and Ion Torrent brands became Thermo Fisher Scientific brands within the life sciences product portfolio, alongside the Thermo Scientific brand. [3]
This consolidation continued with subsequent acquisitions. After Thermo Fisher acquired FEI Company in 2016, the FEI logo was replaced on new products with the Thermo Scientific brand. [4] Similarly, POROS and CaptureSelect products were rebranded to Thermo Scientific by January 2017, [5] and Finesse products were rebranded as Thermo Scientific starting in November 2018. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Thermo Fisher Scientific does not publish an official explanation of symbolism in its wordmark. The company’s mission statement, “to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer,” is the closest documented expression of brand purpose. [7] The company’s 4i Values of Integrity, Intensity, Innovation and Involvement are described as “the foundation of our culture.” [7]
The red color itself is documented as a unifying visual element across the Thermo Scientific product line, as noted in the brand transition communications for acquired product lines. [2] No official source attributes specific symbolic meaning to the color red beyond its role in the brand system.
Typography and Design
The Thermo Fisher Scientific wordmark is a text-based logo with no pictorial symbol. The company’s current website uses a custom font family called Helvetica Neue for TFS, served from its own design system domain. [8] The company also uses Helvetica Neue LT weights including Roman and Bold across its web properties. [9] These font files are used for website content and do not necessarily confirm the typeface used in the logo mark itself.
Thermo Fisher maintains a trademark information page listing its registered marks, including the Thermo Scientific wordmark and the Applied Biosystems wordmark with design. [10] The company also holds a USPTO registration for the THERMO SCIENTIFIC standard character mark. [11]
