Spellbook is an AI-powered legal technology company serving commercial and transactional lawyers, with headquarters in Toronto and St. John’s, Newfoundland.[1] The company was originally founded as Rally in 2018, and in 2023 it rebranded to adopt the name of its flagship AI contract drafting tool, Spellbook.[2]
Design and History
In November 2024, Spellbook unveiled a refreshed brand identity, described by the company as an “evolved gem” with new colors and a new markup language.[3] The rebrand was developed by the agency Focus Lab, which worked alongside UI designer Grace Walker, who later joined Spellbook full-time as creative director.[4]
Focus Lab’s strategic work centered on the brand concept “Questing Together,” which positions Spellbook as an ally that makes transactional lawyers more powerful rather than replacing them.[4] The agency noted that competitors in the legal AI space read as “a single undifferentiated field” of cool blues and neutral type choices, and the new identity was designed to stand apart from that pattern.[4]
The gem emblem is the centerpiece of the identity. Although early explorations leaned into the “book” of Spellbook, the team chose to elevate the gem from the company’s previous identity, refining it into a sharper, more intentional faceted stone. Focus Lab described this approach as retiring what felt “complex and generic” while honoring what the mark had always represented.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The faceted gem ties directly to the brand concept: it reads as a magical object that makes legal work feel less like a grind and more like a craft.[4] The company’s own announcement framed the new look as a symbol of its commitment to lawyers and its mission to make legal services more accessible.[3]
The rebrand also introduced a set of graphic symbols called “markups,” inspired by the editorial markup language lawyers have used for generations to annotate contracts. Curls, brackets, and carets were translated into brand assets that function as background textures, product icons, and graphic language. Spellbook described them as “the spells in the book, made visible.”[4]
Typography and Design
The wordmark is set in Ghost, a typeface by Sharp Type, which also runs through the broader brand system as the secondary typeface.[4] The primary typeface is Arizona Mix by Dianmo, a contemporary serif described by Focus Lab as “distinguished without being cold.”[4]
The primary color palette pairs a near-black called Obsidian with clean white. A six-color secondary palette extends the system with names drawn from the alchemical vocabulary of the brand concept.[4] Brand asset listings document five of these colors with their hex values: Vermilion (#FF4716), Purple Heart (#7834B5), Fun Green (#016A3A), Azure Radiance (#029CFF), and Woodsmoke (#121719).[5]
