Union.ai is an AI development platform that provides orchestration for data, machine learning, and AI workflows. The company is the creator of Flyte, an open-source AI orchestrator originally built internally at Lyft, and offers Union as its managed enterprise platform.[1]
Design and History
The Union.ai visual identity was designed by Order, a Brooklyn-based design studio. The project team included Jesse Reed as Partner and Emily Klaebe as Designer.[2] Order constructed the identity system around the data-focused nature of Union’s work, following the success of the open-source Flyte platform.[2]
Union.ai was founded in 2021 as the enterprise platform for Flyte, after Flyte was open-sourced in 2020.[1] The company was co-founded by Ketan Umare, who helped develop Flyte while an engineer at Lyft, and Haytham Abuelfutuh.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Order looked to core geometric language to build the foundational elements of the identity system, illustrating the complex nature of Union’s work with orchestration and the importance of each individual unit of data.[2] The wordmark is built using the core geometric shapes of a circle and a square.[2] A separate symbol was designed for secondary uses and smaller scales, calling back to the user’s journey throughout the data workflow.[2]
Yellow acts as the primary identifier of the brand, with purple used as a color highlight in the system. The brand is primarily black and white, with photography used in full color to accurately represent specific client use cases.[2]
Typography and Design
To create cohesion with the wordmark’s mathematical characteristics, Order looked toward early geometric sans-serifs, specifically Paul Renner’s Futura.[2] The Yellix type family by Displaay comprises the primary typographic voice. Yellix’s early inspirations from Renner’s first Futura sketch aligned with the geometric qualities of the wordmark’s custom letterforms, and the tension between circular and square shapes lent to both elements of the mark.[2]
The geometric traits established in the wordmark extend into a diverse library of iconography and custom typography used to represent the features of the software.[2]
