ZDNET is a technology news and advice publication founded in 1991, originally launched by Ziff-Davis as ZiffNet on CompuServe before being unified under the name “ZD Net” in 1995.[1] The site has operated under several owners over the decades, including CNET Networks (2000), CBS Interactive (2008), and Red Ventures (2020), before Ziff Davis reacquired it in 2024.[2]
Design and History
In August 2022, ZDNET introduced a new visual identity alongside a site redesign. The new logo was hand-drawn by ZDNET’s long-time graphic design lead, whose name was not publicly disclosed in the announcement.[3] The redesign also introduced a new primary brand color dubbed “Energy Yellow.”[3]
According to ZDNET’s editor-in-chief at the time, the new look was intended to embrace the publication’s focus on disruptive innovation. The adoption of lowercase lettering and slashes as design elements was described as a way to acknowledge the brand’s roots at the dawn of the internet and its connection with coders and internet entrepreneurs.[3]
Earlier in the brand’s history, the name “ZD Net” was changed to “ZDNet” in March 1997, accompanied by a redesign that introduced content “channels.”[1] Subsequent redesigns occurred in 2003, when CNET relaunched ZDNet as an enterprise-focused publication, and again in 2006 and 2010, with each iteration shifting editorial emphasis toward blogs and topic-based coverage.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “ZD” in ZDNET references Ziff-Davis, the original parent company, while the “Net” portion reflects the brand’s online origins.[2] The 2022 identity’s lowercase lettering and slash elements were explicitly tied by ZDNET to the internet’s early culture and the publication’s relationship with coders and internet entrepreneurs.[3]
The “Energy Yellow” primary brand color introduced in 2022 has been catalogued by brand asset services with the hex code #D0FF4B.[4] ZDNET’s own announcement did not provide an exact color specification or elaborate on the color’s intended meaning beyond its name.
Typography and Design
The 2022 ZDNET logo was hand-drawn rather than set in a commercial typeface, according to the company’s announcement.[3] The wordmark uses lowercase lettering, a departure from the all-caps styling seen in earlier versions of the brand’s identity. The design also incorporates slashes as recurring visual elements.[3]
