Cablevision Systems Corporation was a cable television and telecommunications provider serving the New York metropolitan area, founded in 1973 and based on Long Island, New York.[1] The company operated under the Cablevision name until its acquisition by Altice in June 2016, after which the brand was gradually phased out in favor of the Optimum name.[2]
Design and History
Cablevision introduced its Optimum brand in 1999 for its broadband service, later extending it to television and phone offerings.[2] In September 2012, the company unveiled a new Optimum logo and its first branding campaign in nearly a decade, focused on customers and the connections enabled by its products.[3]
The 2012 logo was developed by COLLINS, a New York-based marketing firm led by Brian Collins, working in cooperation with Cablevision’s internal marketing team.[3] The design program was implemented across all customer-facing platforms, including field service trucks, employee uniforms, web properties, direct customer communications, and marketing efforts.[3]
The relaunch was part of a broader cultural shift at Cablevision, with chief financial officer Greg Siebert describing the brand relaunch as signaling a transition from being “acquisition oriented and promotional to being retention oriented and brand specific.”[4]
Following Altice’s completion of its acquisition of Cablevision in June 2016, Altice announced in May 2017 that it would replace the Optimum brand with a unified Altice identity across its operating companies, with all commercial brands adopting the new logo by the end of the second quarter of 2018.[2] Altice worked with Publicis Groupe and the U.S. operations of design agency Turner Duckworth to create the new identity and logo.[2]
Altice ultimately reversed course on phasing out the Optimum name. In November 2025, Altice USA rebranded itself as Optimum Communications, adopting the trade name of its consumer-facing brand and changing its stock ticker symbol from ATUS to OPTU.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Brian Collins, whose firm designed the 2012 Optimum logo, the design was driven by a principle of simplicity: “Simplicity gets rid of the complicated and replaces it with clarity.”[6] The logo was described in Cablevision’s announcement as reflecting “a cleaner and much more simplified approach to design, unencumbered by extraneous visual elements.”[6]
Kristin Dolan, Cablevision’s senior executive vice president of product management and marketing, said the new logo and branding campaign reflected the company’s “commitment to honesty, transparency, the quality of the services we provide and, importantly, how we interact with our customers.”[3]
Typography and Design
Documented details about the typography used in the 2012 Optimum logo are limited. The design was produced by COLLINS in cooperation with Cablevision’s internal marketing and product groups, and was described as a simplified approach without extraneous visual elements.[6] The logo was used across all Optimum consumer-facing properties as part of an overall redesign of the brand.[6]
