PCCW Limited is a Hong Kong-headquartered company with interests in telecommunications, media, IT solutions, property development and investment, and other businesses.[1] The company traces its current identity to August 2000, when Pacific Century CyberWorks merged with Hong Kong Telecom.[2]
Design and History
PCCW unveiled its new corporate identity in November 2000, shortly after the merger with Hong Kong Telecom.[3] The identity was created to reflect an original post-merger brand character.[4]
The mark consists of a sketched grid with multicolored squares.[5] According to a 2003 report in the South China Morning Post, the logo features 12 geometric grids in seven colours, designed to represent the company’s different business units, from traditional telecoms to the internet.[6]
In July 2002, the company announced it would change its legal English name from Pacific Century CyberWorks Limited to PCCW Limited, a move intended to align the company’s statutory name with its trademark and brand.[3] The board believed the legal name should match the logo and brand, noting that employees, customers, media and shareholders already referred to the company as “PCCW.”[7] The Chinese name, 電訊盈科有限公司, remained unchanged.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The multicolored grid design was intended to represent the company’s different business units, spanning from traditional telecommunications to internet services.[6] No official source documents additional symbolic meaning for individual colours or the grid arrangement.
