China Telecom Corporation Limited is one of China’s major state-owned telecommunications operators, formed through the restructuring of the former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications’ telecom operations. Its current corporate logo, introduced in 2002, is built around two interlocking letter “C” forms that have become widely associated with the company’s “bull horn” or “ox head” visual identity.
Design and History
The current China Telecom logo dates to May 2002, when the company was formally reorganized following the north-south split of China’s telecommunications industry. The new mark replaced a previous logo that had been in use since 1995. That earlier emblem, designed by Beijing Ideal Design Art Company on commission from the former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications’ Telecom Administration Bureau, featured a three-dimensional “zhong” (中) character built from traditional Chinese fret patterns, symbolizing the reach of China’s telecommunications network.[1]
The 2002 change was driven by the company’s restructuring. After the split, China Telecom no longer represented the entire national telecom industry, and officials stated the old emblem, which had come to symbolize the whole sector, was no longer appropriate for a single market competitor. The company described the new identity as necessary for accurate positioning, for presenting a fresh image in a new era, and as a practical step to adapt to market changes.[2] The new logo was selected through a public bidding process.[2]
In January 2023, China Telecom updated the logo’s color, shifting from a deep blue to a brighter, lighter blue. The change was applied to the company’s official app icon and its online business hall website. Reports noted that the graphic form and lettering appeared unchanged, with only the color adjusted.[3] The China Telecom Research Institute characterized the update as part of a broader effort by telecom operators to make their brands appear younger and more energetic.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2002 logo is constructed from the trend lines of the letter “C,” China Telecom’s first English initial. Two open “C” forms extend in different directions and intersect, creating multiple readings. Official descriptions at the time of launch said the mark resembles open arms, conveying the company’s sincerity and warmth; a lively ox head, expressing a down-to-earth and pragmatic spirit; and a dove in flight. The intersecting forms were also said to evoke the longitude and latitude lines of the globe, suggesting a telecommunications network connecting every corner of the world.[5][2]
Blue was chosen as the primary color to represent high technology, innovation and progress.[2] According to the company’s 2008 visual identity system manual, the standard color was a deep blue with CMYK values of 100-75-0-0, corresponding to the hex value #2037AC.[3]
Typography and Design
The Chinese characters in the China Telecom wordmark are rendered in a calligraphic brush style, described at the logo’s 2002 launch as giving the identity vitality, expressiveness and approachability. This traditional calligraphic treatment was paired with the modern, international-style graphic mark, blending classical and contemporary elements.[2] The company also adopted the slogan “World at Your Fingertips” (世界触手可及) alongside the new identity.[3]
