Telenor ASA is the Norwegian telecommunications group whose visual identity has evolved through three distinct phases since the company adopted the Telenor name in 1995. The current mark, introduced in 2006 and refined in 2016, is an abstract blue symbol that Telenor describes as representing movement and change. The company refers to itself as “the blue brand” due to the central role of its blue color system across all markets. [1]
Design and History
The Telenor name dates to 1 January 1995, when the Norwegian state-owned Televerket AS changed its name to Telenor AS. [2] The original corporate identity was designed by Landor Associates, working with Oslo advertising agency Alfa & Omega on the name. Landor executive director Lars Midthaug said the goal was to stand out in a sector dominated by technological imagery with “a warm, friendly symbol representing human communications.” [3]
On 9 February 2006, Telenor launched a completely new visual profile. The new logo was developed by Keshen Teo, Creative Director at the London-based agency Wolff Olins. [4] The launch coincided with Telenor’s expansion as an international group, with subsidiaries in Denmark and Hungary adopting the same visual profile while retaining their local brand names. [5] The new identity replaced the earlier red and blue logo, which had been in use since the 1995 rebranding. [6]
In 2016, Telenor modernized and digitalized its brand by releasing the symbol from the logotypes, allowing the symbol to stand alone more prominently. According to Telenor, this change resulted in a more unified brand across its markets. [1] The 2016 update also expanded the blue brand color into a range of tones to strengthen Telenor’s position as “the blue brand.” [1]
Meaning and Symbolism
Telenor’s official description of the 2006 logo is that it is “a symbol of movement and change,” signaling the company’s shift toward stronger customer orientation across all operations. [4] The company’s own brand history page repeats this description, noting that the logo symbolized movement and change and marked a shift toward customer orientation. [1]
Norwegian media noted that the new blue, slightly glossy logo could evoke associations with a propeller, though Telenor declined to describe it that way. [7] Telenor’s official communications do not assign any propeller meaning to the symbol.
Typography and Design
Telenor’s official brand guidelines describe the logo as the most important brand marker and the core of its visual identity. [8] The guidelines specify that the symbol should always be rendered in Telenor Blue when placed on white or light backgrounds, with a white version available for use on primary blue backgrounds. [9]
The official Telenor Blue is specified as HEX #00C8FF, RGB 0, 200, 255, CMYK 100, 0, 0, 0, and Pantone Process Cyan. [10] The brand guidelines describe the blue colors as “a key ingredient for establishing brand recognition.” [11]
In Sweden, the agency Nordid worked with Letters from Sweden to develop a custom typeface for Telenor Sweden, with headline typography inspired by the shapes of the Telenor symbol. [12] This work was part of a broader Swedish brand program that rebalanced the lockup with a smaller symbol and larger wordmark. [12]
In January 2024, Telenor Group selected Knowit Experience as its exclusive partner for brand strategy and identity for three years, with Knowit taking over from the London-based design agency Design Bridge/Superunion. [13]
