EchoStar Corporation (Nasdaq: ECHO) is a global communications and content delivery company offering technology, networking services, television entertainment and connectivity under brands including EchoStar, Boost Mobile, Sling TV, DISH TV, Hughes and Hughesnet.[1] The company was co-founded by Charlie Ergen in 1980 and is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado.[2]
Design and History
The current EchoStar corporate mark is a stylized wordmark of the name “ECHOSTAR” in all capital letters. According to the trademark registration filed in February 2009, the mark consists of the word “ECHOSTAR” in a stylized format, with the color transitioning from red at the top to black at the bottom.[3] Red and black are both claimed as features of the mark.[3]
EchoStar’s visual identity has evolved alongside major corporate restructuring events. On January 1, 2008, the original EchoStar Communications Corporation completed a spinoff of its technology and set-top box business into a separate publicly traded company, EchoStar Corporation, effectively splitting the original company into two businesses.[4] The consumer satellite TV business retained the DISH Network name, while EchoStar Corporation continued as the technology and satellite infrastructure company.
In August 2023, DISH Network and EchoStar Corporation announced a definitive agreement to combine in an all-stock merger.[5] The merger was completed on December 31, 2023, with the resulting company retaining the EchoStar name.[6] EchoStar’s official corporate communications continue to use the EchoStar wordmark across its brands and subsidiaries.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented symbolism for the EchoStar mark is limited. The trademark filing describes only the wordmark’s stylized format and its red-to-black color transition, without attributing specific meaning to either element.[3] The company’s own brand guidelines for its Hughes subsidiary specify that the EchoStar logo uses PMS 1797 red, with the symbol and accompanying text in black, though this applies to a specific satellite-numbered variant of the logo rather than the corporate wordmark generally.[7]
Typography and Design
The EchoStar wordmark uses a stylized, all-caps letterform treatment as described in the trademark registration.[3] The design is a text-only mark with no accompanying symbol or icon in the registered version. The gradient effect from red at the top to black at the bottom is the mark’s most distinctive documented visual feature.[3]
