Smartfren is an Indonesian telecommunications brand operated by PT Smartfren Telecom Tbk, a subsidiary of the Sinar Mas group. The company’s visual identity has undergone several distinct phases, from an early ear-shaped symbol to a corporate logo tied to its parent group, and finally to the typographic wordmark used today.
Design and History
In June 2011, PT Smartfren Telecom Tbk introduced a new logo combining eye and ear symbols, representing the company’s commitment as a telecommunications operator to delivering quality services.[1] The eye-and-ear motif was later described in academic commentary as inviting people to see and hear the wider world in line with the brand’s “Live Smart” tagline.[2]
In February 2018, Smartfren began using the Sinar Mas group logo for corporate purposes, replacing the previous red-and-orange ear-shaped logo. Deputy CEO Djoko Tata Ibrahim explained at the time that the corporate logo was changed so Smartfren would share the same identity as other Sinar Mas business pillars, while the distinctive Smartfren font would be used for branding on product packaging.[3]
In December 2019, Smartfren quietly introduced a refreshed wordmark. The update was based on the typographic style first used in January 2011, with the letterforms largely unchanged but with reduced letter spacing and thicker strokes. The most notable addition was a magenta square block placed at the end of the wordmark.[4] The new wordmark also supported the abbreviation “sf.”[5]
Ibrahim said the change was not publicly announced because it only involved the letterforms. He explained that the square shape, rather than a circle, was chosen deliberately to convey stability and to appeal to the company’s target market, which was roughly 70 percent millennials.[6][7]
Meaning and Symbolism
Smartfren’s 2022 annual report describes the brand logo as “the symbol of positive impacting change toward creative and self-reliant Indonesia.”[8] Regarding the 2019 redesign, Ibrahim stated that the square block was intended to make the brand feel more solid, stable, grounded, and closer to millennials.[7]
Typography and Design
The 2019 wordmark retained the basic letterform structure of the 2011 typographic logo while tightening letter spacing and increasing stroke thickness. The magenta square appended to the wordmark was described as both a way to carry forward brand assets and a symbol of solidity and stability.[4] Brand color data for Smartfren lists a pink-red hue with the hex code #D81D83 among its primary colors.[9]
