Movistar is the commercial brand of Telefónica for Spain and Latin America (except Brazil). Its visual identity centers on a stylized uppercase “M” symbol, first introduced in 2005 and refined several times since. The current version, launched in June 2020, pairs the unchanged “M” icon with a new wordmark and a brighter blue color.

Design and History

The independent Movistar logo was first presented on 5 April 2005, coinciding with the growth of mobile telephony. The wavy uppercase “M” was created by the branding agency Wolff Olins, while Grupo K developed the brand identity and Brand Book, and Publicis designed the launch campaign. The original mark used lime green and blue colors inherited from Telefónica, and was designed to give Movistar a clear distinction from its parent company. More than a thousand proposals were considered and over 3,200 interviews were conducted in Spain and Latin America before launch. [1] [2]

In 2010, Movistar expanded from a mobile-only operator to the single commercial brand for all Telefónica products in Spain and Hispanic America. The logo was reformulated to reflect this expansion, softening the forms of the “M” and changing the blue tones. The company also introduced the global slogan “Compartida, la vida es más” that year. [2] [1]

In November 2016, Telefónica unveiled a new Movistar identity described as a “M” that is closer, simpler and more digital. The new mark kept two recognizable brand colors, blue and green, and eliminated volumes and gradients to suit digital environments. The redesign was developed by the British agency Lambie-Nairn. [3] [4]

On 15 June 2020, Movistar updated its logo again, changing both color and typography. The “M” icon itself remained unchanged, but the blue was made brighter, and the wordmark was replaced with a more standard sans-serif typeface with increased spacing from the icon. The simplification process that began in 2016 culminated in this version: an uppercase blue “M” with a cleaner, more minimalist design intended to reinforce digital presence and multi-platform integration. [5] [6] [7]

Meaning and Symbolism

The “M” symbol was designed to represent Movistar itself, the name under which Telefónica unified its mobile operations. The simplicity of the logo was intended to convey digital evolution and the consolidation of an ecosystem described by the company as “simple, flexible, coherent and with emotion.” [1] [3]

In late September 2025, Movistar made a subtle change to its logo color on its Spanish website, replacing the light blue used since 2017 with a darker blue matching the corporate color adopted by Telefónica in its 2021 rebrand. The change was interpreted as visually aligning Movistar more closely with its parent company. [8]

Typography and Design

Since the 2020 update, the Movistar wordmark has used the corporate typeface of its parent company Telefónica rather than a custom font. The wordmark appears in uppercase with the first letter “M” capitalized, and the typeface is a more standard sans-serif compared to earlier versions. The icon and wordmark spacing was also increased in the 2020 redesign. [5] [9]
