Telecom Italia, operating commercially as TIM, is the Italian telecommunications group whose visual identity has undergone several documented transformations since the mid-1990s. The current mark, introduced in 2016, was developed in collaboration with the international brand consultancy Interbrand and features a red T-shaped icon with a white wordmark on a blue background.[1]
Design and History
The visual lineage of the TIM identity traces back to the Telecom Italia logo of 1994, which was characterized by a tetragram made up of red “waves,” symbolizing the arms of telephone exchange selectors and telephone cables.[2] In 1995, the first TIM logo (Telecom Italia Mobile) referenced this Telecom Italia legacy, marking the company’s entry into the mobile market with a new identity.[2]
In 1998, the logo was enclosed in a stylized oval shape, sometimes referred to as the “biscotto,” which increased the visual impact of the communication.[3] The logo evolved again in 2004, when the font changed and the tetragram became a trigram, with the wave forms reduced to three.[4] In 2014, the logo was given a three-dimensional look, intended to guarantee greater impact and digital appeal.[4]
On 13 January 2016, TIM presented its current logo, which became the single commercial brand for the group, replacing the separate Telecom Italia and TIM commercial identities.[5] The redesign was conceived in collaboration with Interbrand.[1] The new mark eliminated the containing shape of the previous “biscotto” oval.[6] At the time of the launch, CEO Marco Patuano described the logo as “iconic” and “capable of adapting to all media, online and offline.”[7]
In February 2025, TIM unveiled a refreshed brand identity. The logo itself and the font remained the same, but the blue background was made brighter and more vibrant, described by TIM as an “ultra blue.”[8] The TIM icon, the brand’s emblem, was made more prominent within the new identity.[9]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current TIM brand is characterized by a red icon representing a T, described by the company as a symbol of simplicity, alongside the white wordmark on a blue background.[2] The 2016 redesign was framed by the company as marking a change in its role, from a pure telephone operator to an industrial and technological player.[7]
Typography and Design
According to TIM’s official brand guidelines, the font used in the wordmark is a TIM proprietary typeface, developed following a Sans Serif model.[1] The 2016 logo design removed any containing shape around the icon and wordmark.[6]
