Yota is a Russian mobile operator and technology brand that launched in 2008 as the consumer-facing brand of the WiMAX operator Scartel. The company’s visual identity has gone through two distinct phases: an original mark created by a London agency in 2008, and a 2022 refresh by the Moscow studio Repina Branding.
Design and History
The original Yota identity was created in 2008 by the British brand consultancy 300 Million, which won a tender for the project.[1][2] The logo featured a small figure standing on its head, described by the company as a “little blue or white man doing a handstand.”[3] The figure was nicknamed “Nuf,” a reversal of the English word “fun.”[4] The inverted figure was intended to embody brand characteristics such as originality, joy and freedom of action.[2]
In 2021, Yota organized a tender to update its visual identity, which was won by the Moscow agency Repina Branding.[5] The refresh was prompted by the fact that the original brand book, developed more than a decade earlier when Yota was not yet a federal mobile operator, had lost relevance; only the logo, font and brand color remained in active use.[5]
Repina Branding conducted a restyling of the logo to make the mark more harmonious and modern. The shape of the Nuf figure was corrected, with a circle used as its geometric basis, so that the new mark would “rhyme” with its text portion.[5] The agency also changed the font portion of the logo, corrected proportions and developed a horizontal version, which had not previously existed and was easier to place on most media.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The inverted figure in the original Yota logo carried a documented meaning. When Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin asked Yota CEO Denis Sverdlov in 2011, “Why did you turn the little man upside down?”, Sverdlov replied: “It symbolises our approach to work, we find solutions no one has ever thought of before.”[3]
The 2022 refresh introduced a new visual element: a simple, dynamic symbol described as a “window” that opens the world of Yota to the user. The window functions as a frame for content, allowing the brand to focus attention on products, tariffs, devices, slogans or illustrations. The shape was noted to resemble the outline of a smartphone, fitting for a mobile operator.[7][5]
Typography and Design
In the 2022 refresh, Repina Branding updated the typography as part of the new identity system. The text version of the new logo was designed to be easily used within slogans, combining with the new corporate font while standing out within a phrase. Unique symbols, including the ruble sign and the infinity sign, were added to the corporate typeface.[5] The agency also created a unified iconography system built on a universal grid for constructing pictograms.[5]
