China Mobile, the mainland Chinese telecommunications operator, introduced its current corporate identity in 2013. The mark is built around a ribbon-like “bond” or “link” motif, a concept carried over from the company’s earlier logo, and is paired with the Chinese characters “中国移动” and the lowercase English wordmark “China Mobile.”
Design and History
The current China Mobile logo debuted in September 2013 at the China International Information and Communications Exhibition, where it appeared on the company’s exhibition booth without a formal launch announcement. The new mark was created by Zhengbang (正邦), a Chinese brand consultancy that also designed China Mobile’s “and 和” commercial sub-brand identity, which was officially unveiled in December 2013 at the company’s Global Partners Conference. Zhengbang provided the group logo VI design, the commercial sub-brand naming and logo, and related 3G and 4G brand visual systems. [1] [2]
Compared with the previous logo, which had been in use for more than a decade, the 2013 update made several notable changes. The old all-blue five-line symbol gained a green line in the middle, the Chinese text was shortened from “中国移动通信” to “中国移动” (dropping the word for “communications”), and the English wordmark changed from all-caps “CHINA MOBILE” to title case “China Mobile.” The Chinese characters were also redrawn with rounder, softer letterforms. [3]
The redesign was driven by a desire to shift the brand’s perception from “steady and cold” toward a more youthful, approachable image. According to Zhengbang’s design case notes, the new “ribbon handshake” shape deliberately preserved China Mobile’s existing brand equity while making the overall form simpler, more dynamic and more fluid, with an openness that suggested the extensibility of the internet. The lighter blue replaced the previous “strong and cold” color feeling, and the green accent was intended to add associations of innovation vitality and social responsibility. [1] [2]
Meaning and Symbolism
China Mobile’s identity is based on the visual concept of a “纽带” (ribbon or bond). The 2013 update retained this ribbon as the core design element but removed the enclosing frame that had surrounded the old logo, which commentators described as breaking free from a sense of limitation. The ribbon was also given an abstract segmented treatment, making the whole image cleaner and more fluid while symbolizing the infinite extensibility of the internet. [4]
The earlier logo, which the 2013 mark evolved from, used a set of interlocking lines that formed a hexagonal network structure representing mobile cellular networks. Those lines contained the letters “C” and “M” (for China Mobile) and were described as resembling two hands clasped together, symbolizing how the company’s service brought people closer. The old mark sat within a circular frame, a reference to global connectivity. The 2013 redesign broke the five lines apart at their connection points, preserving the “C” and “M” suggestion while adding a sense of flexibility that commentators linked to the free flow of data in the mobile internet era. Typography and Design
Zhengbang’s design notes describe two deliberate typographic decisions in the 2013 identity. The Chinese name was shortened from “中国移动通信” to “中国移动” to break the perception that China Mobile was limited to telephone communications and to de-emphasize its “communications” industry label. The English wordmark was changed from uppercase “CHINA MOBILE” to lowercase “China Mobile,” a shift the designers said improved readability and gave the brand a livelier, friendlier character.
