Finnlevy was a Finnish record label and company founded in 1966 by Musiikki-Fazer and Philips-Polygram. The label operated until 1998, when Warner Music Group, which had acquired Fazer Musiikki in 1993, disbanded the branch while retaining ownership of the brand. Today, Finnlevy remains a registered auxiliary trade name of Warner Music Finland. [1] [2]
Design and History
The Finnlevy mark was designed by Finnish graphic designer Jukka Pellinen in 1966. [3] Pellinen (1925–2011) was a prominent Finnish graphic designer and industrial designer who created marks and symbols throughout his career. [4]
The original Finnlevy logo consisted of the letter “F” with the word “Finnlevy” beneath it. [5] The “F” in the mark was widely recognized by Finnish audiences as referring to Fazer, the parent company behind the label. [6]
Later releases carried variations of the mark. Some records featured a combined “F(azer) Finnlevy” logo similar to the Fazer Records mark, while others used a black and silver “f” picture logo on the label. [5] [7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “F” in the Finnlevy logo functioned as a direct reference to Fazer, the music company that co-founded and later fully owned the label. Finnish consumers automatically associated the “F” mark with Fazer, making the logo an effective shorthand for the corporate parent. [6]
Typography and Design
Documented descriptions of the Finnlevy label design are limited. A 1973 release described the label as silver and white with a black and silver Finnlevy “f” picture logo positioned on the left side. [7] The mark was also described as a black “F” and white “F” resembling a yin and yang symbol in later Fazer-era applications. [6]
