Alliant Credit Union is a Chicago-based, not-for-profit financial cooperative that operates as a fully digital credit union, serving nearly one million members nationwide with more than $20 billion in assets.[1] The institution traces its roots to October 26, 1935, when a small group of United Airlines employees organized a credit union originally named the United Airlines Employees’ Credit Union.[2]
Design and History
The Alliant identity was introduced in 2003, when the United Airlines Employees’ Credit Union changed its name to Alliant Credit Union as part of a broader expansion of its field of membership.[2] The name change, along with a new logo and branding initiative, was the first in the credit union’s 60-year history.[3] According to the credit union, the name was chosen as a combination of the words “all,” “alliance,” and “reliant,” with the three circles in the logo representing each word.[2]
The logo consists of three overlapping circles: a dark blue circle on the left, a light blue circle on the right, and a green circle centered above the two, overlapping each.[4] The green, dark blue, and light blue colors are claimed as features of the mark in the trademark filing.[4] The three-circle design was meant to show connection and reliance, according to the credit union’s announcement at the time of the rebrand.[3]
The credit union’s transition to a fully digital institution began gradually in 2014, as branches saw less and less use. By the spring of 2020, the final branches closed, and Alliant has remained a fully digital financial institution outside of its corporate headquarters in Chicago.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The three circles in the Alliant logo each represent one of the three words that form the credit union’s name: “all,” “alliance,” and “reliant.”[2] The overlapping arrangement of the circles was intended to convey connection and reliance, reflecting the credit union’s expanded membership model that welcomed select employer groups, communities near O’Hare Airport, and their families.[3][2]
Typography and Design
The Alliant wordmark appears alongside the three-circle symbol in the credit union’s branding. The trademark filing for the logo covers the image mark only, with the three-circle design and its claimed colors of green, dark blue, and light blue.[4] No specific typeface or designer attribution for the wordmark has been publicly documented in the available sources.
