LSEG, the London Stock Exchange Group, is a global financial markets infrastructure and data business headquartered in London. Its visual identity has undergone two significant transformations since the group acquired data and analytics firm Refinitiv in 2021, moving from a coat of arms-based emblem to a streamlined, initials-only logotype.
Design and History
Following the acquisition of Refinitiv, LSEG’s corporate identity was developed to draw equally from the legacy of both brands. The London Stock Exchange’s coat of arms was refined to project historic strength, stability and integrity in a modern way, while the logo was rendered in Refinitiv Blue to reinforce the acquired brand.[1] The brand transformation was led by Interbrand, which listed the LSEG project among its corporate identity work.[2]
In 2023, LSEG’s chief brand officer Brigitte Trafford described the approach as tweaking the centuries-old London Stock Exchange logo and combining it with Refinitiv’s distinctive, electric blue colour scheme, creating brand codes that felt fresh yet familiar.[3] The rebrand also involved scrapping the Refinitiv name from financial data products, with LSEG stating its new-look brand would bring together all its products and services.[4]
In September 2025, LSEG changed the logo on its website, removing the blue coat of arms resembling that of the London Stock Exchange, as well as the bourse’s motto “dictum meum pactum” (Latin for “my word is my bond”). The new design features only LSEG’s initials with no emblem. A spokesperson said: “We have updated LSEG’s brand and have streamlined our logo to improve its legibility on digital platforms.” The London Stock Exchange’s iconic crest remains part of the LSE’s own logo, and LSEG’s version of the emblem continues to appear on buildings and event spaces.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The London Stock Exchange’s coat of arms, granted in 1923, includes the Latin motto “Dictum meum pactum” (“Our word is our bond”), reflecting the importance of trust in the financial marketplace. The coat of arms features two crown-wearing griffins, a golden lion and a shield with a red cross and sword.[5] The earlier LSEG identity drew on this heraldic heritage, with the refined coat of arms intended to project historic strength, stability and integrity in a modern way.[1]
Typography and Design
For the earlier LSEG identity, typographer Jesse Ragan created a custom logotype inspired by the original characters in the motto of the coat of arms.[1] The lettering of the motto, rendered in a hand-drawn version of Berthold Wolpe’s typeface Albertus, informed the tone of the new LSEG logotype, while the unconventional crossbar of the G was a nod to English lettering artist Michael Harvey.[6]
Interbrand asked XYZ Type to help imagine lettering possibilities for LSEG’s new identity design. Jesse Ragan drew four letterforms (L, S, E and G) in a stately flared sans serif style that became the typographic signature of the identity system. The lettering was so well received that Interbrand recommended expanding it into a full typeface, LSEG Motto, for use across all brands under the LSEG umbrella. The typeface plays off the conventions of serif and sans letterforms: structurally a geometric sans, with details recalling the calligraphic flourishes of traditional serif typefaces.[6]
