BNI is the corporate identity of PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, an Indonesian state-owned bank established in 1946. The bank’s current logo, introduced in 2004, combines the numeral “46” with the BNI acronym in a square format using orange and turquoise as signature corporate colors.
Design and History
BNI has used three distinct logos since its founding. From 1946 until 1988, the bank used a logo featuring the BNI acronym together with its founding year. In 1988, the bank introduced a “Sailing Boat” logo, described as a “bahtera berlayar di tengah samudra” (a sailing vessel in the middle of the ocean), which reflected a fresh corporate direction and included an orange accent on the boat’s hull. [1] [2]
The current logo was launched in 2004 as part of a corporate rebranding effort. The new mark was designed by Landor Associates, which was tasked with creating a fresh bank image that would improve brand positioning while retaining the BNI name that had been in use since 1946. [3] The redesign was planned as a corporate identity renewal scheduled for the second half of 2004. [4]
The 2004 logo is simpler than its predecessor, built from the numeral “46” combined with the BNI acronym. The number 46 references the bank’s founding year, 1946, and reinforces its heritage as the first bank of the Republic of Indonesia. [2] The nickname “Bank BNI” was shortened to “BNI’46” following the logo change. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The numeral “46” is a symbol of BNI’s birth and reflects pride in its legacy as the first bank in the Republic of Indonesia. In the logo, the number is placed diagonally, breaking through an orange square, which was intended to depict a modern and dynamic BNI. [6] Landor Associates described the diagonal placement of the “46” as deliberately “breaking out” of the square form to convey a sense of new thinking, modernity and dynamism. [3]
According to BNI’s official annual report, the orange and turquoise colors serve as the bank’s signature corporate palette, developed to convey a modern and fresh impression. The number 46 is described as part of BNI’s founding history as Indonesia’s first bank. [7] The turquoise letters of “BNI” were designed to reflect strength, authority, solidity, uniqueness and a more modern image, while the orange was made brighter and stronger to convey confidence and freshness. [8]
The 2004 identity was introduced alongside the Indonesian-language slogan “Melayani Negeri, Kebanggaan Bangsa” (Serving the Nation, the Nation’s Pride). [9]
Typography and Design
The logo combines the “46” numeral with the BNI acronym in turquoise lettering. The mark is constructed within a square format, with the orange square serving as a background element that the diagonal “46” visually breaks through. The design was part of a broader corporate identity program that also covered the architecture of BNI’s branch locations. [3]
