Simmons Bank, the principal subsidiary of Simmons First National Corporation, uses a logo built around a red “S1” bug paired with a “Simmons Bank” wordmark. The bank’s official brand guidelines refer to this symbol as the “S1 bug” and specify that it must not be separated from the logotype or replaced with other shapes or icons.[1]
Design and History
Simmons Bank was founded in 1903 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.[2] The bank’s visual identity has evolved alongside its expansion through acquisitions across Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.[2]
In April 2014, a new Simmons First National Bank logo appeared on the south side of Arkansas’ tallest building in Little Rock, an installation timed to coincide with the company’s annual shareholders meeting. At that time, the corporate name and the official name of the flagship bank still contained the words “First National,” and the logo still had a “1” across the “S,” but new branch-level signage said only “Simmons Bank.”[3]
In January 2015, Simmons First National Bank announced it was changing its name to simply Simmons Bank. A St. Louis community president cited simplicity as the main reason for the change, saying the longer name was “a mouthful and confusing” as the bank expanded into new markets.[4]
In 2021, a brand refresh and web design project for Simmons Bank was completed by the agency Hero Digital. The scope included a scalable design system and promotional materials supporting the launch of a new digital experience. The project aimed to maintain the bank’s “hometown, neighborly feel” while updating and unifying its digital identity across all channels.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The bank’s official brand guidelines describe the brand’s visual approach as “simple,” tied to the bank’s commitment to “Honestly Good Banking.” The guidelines state that products, services, experiences, and even the way the brand is visualized should be simple, conveying “a sense of ease and comfort.”[1]
The “1” across the “S” in the logo references the bank’s historical “First National” name, which remained in the corporate and flagship bank names even after branch-level signage was shortened to “Simmons Bank.”[3]
Typography and Design
Simmons Bank’s official brand guidelines specify Azo Sans as the brand typeface, used in Bold for headlines and Regular for subheads, body copy and disclosures.[1]
The guidelines establish precise spacing rules for the logo. The letter “i” in Simmons serves as the scale unit: the space from the outer edge of the bug to the text should always be two “i” widths, and when using the stacked logo, the “Simmons Bank” text should be scaled so the letter “i” is flush with the top and bottom of the S1 bug.[1]
Brand guidelines also prohibit separating the S1 bug from the logotype, rotating or stretching parts of the logo, making the S1 bug larger than the logotype, or removing the logotype from its box.[1]
