N26 is a Berlin-based digital bank that operates entirely through a mobile app. Its visual identity has evolved through two documented refinements since the company rebranded from Number26 in 2016, with each change tied to the bank’s growth and product philosophy.
Design and History
N26 launched in 2013 as Number26, a name derived from the company’s first business address at Unter den Linden 26 in Berlin, with the number 26 also serving as a reference to the Rubik’s Cube and its 26 segments, a symbol of complexity that can be solved with the right strategy.[1]
In August 2016, the company shortened its name to N26 and introduced a new logo. According to N26’s own account, the design started with a sketch of a mobile phone, the product inspiration for everything the bank does, and the core blocking elements of the phone shape were used to create an updated letter “N”.[2]
In December 2018, N26 refined the logo again. The bank described the previous mark as “mathematically correct but lacking character,” and the new version was made slightly more rounded with a thicker diameter so it would stand out better across different backgrounds and colors.[3] The update was subtle enough that most customers would not notice the change, and the overall structure of the logo remained intact.[1]
The 2018 refresh also introduced a new color palette. N26’s head of design explained the choice of colors, which included teal as the primary brand color, golden wheat, rhubarb red, and petrol blue.[4] The corporate design was developed entirely in-house.[1]
In 2023, N26 launched a new global brand campaign called “This is how I bank,” created by the bank’s in-house creative studio with Amoxi Media as production partner and Stini Roehrs as director and photographer.[5] The design studio Dokument has also been credited with collaborating with N26 on a refreshed brand identity encompassing brand design, motion, and visual direction.[6]
Typography and Design
The N26 wordmark is set in a slightly modified version of the GT America typeface, which is also used in print materials and current campaigns.[1] The font files used across N26’s website and app confirm GT America as the brand’s core typeface.[7]
The logo consists of a large letter “N” with two short horizontal lines positioned above and below it, followed by the number “26.”[8] The 2018 refinement adjusted the spacing between the “N” and its accompanying lines, with observers noting the proportions became more harmonious and the mark gained a more solid, established appearance.[1]
