People’s United Financial was the Bridgeport, Connecticut-based holding company that operated People’s United Bank, a regional bank serving the northeastern United States. The bank’s visual identity was built around a blue-and-red wordmark featuring an elliptical device that unified the three words of the bank’s name. Following M&T Bank’s acquisition of People’s United Financial in April 2022, the People’s United brand was retired and its branches were converted to the M&T name.
Design and History
People’s United Bank adopted its name and logo on June 6, 2007, when the former People’s Bank changed its name to accommodate its plans for growth. The new logo was executed in two colors and consisted of the People’s United Bank name with an ellipse that united all three words.[1] The bank’s chairman noted that the company maintained the brand equity built in the “People’s” name and enhanced the logo to reflect a more contemporary, forward-looking stance.[2]
The bank spent only “in the thousands” to develop the new name and symbols, according to a company spokesperson, unlike some companies that spend millions on a name change.[3]
The logo’s design was described in detail in trademark filings. The mark consisted of stylized blue lettering of the word “PEOPLE’S UNITED” partially encircled with a dynamic red ring, which also formed and punctuated the letter “i” with a red dot. The mark also included stylized blue italicized lettering of the words “FINANCIAL, INC.” situated immediately below the word “UNITED.”[4] The red and blue colors were claimed as features of the mark in the trademark registration.[5]
The logo’s distinctive red orbit icon, which encircled both “People’s” and “United,” was noted in a 2012 federal appeals court decision involving a trademark dispute with Peoples Federal Savings Bank of Massachusetts.[6]
M&T Bank completed its acquisition of People’s United Financial on April 1, 2022, in a transaction valued at $8.3 billion. People’s United customers continued to be served through its existing branches and websites until its brand and systems were fully converted to M&T’s, which was expected to occur in the third quarter of 2022.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo’s elliptical device was described in contemporary reporting as an element that “unites” the three words of the bank’s name, visually reinforcing the “United” portion of the People’s United brand.[1] The red ring that partially encircled the wordmark and punctuated the letter “i” with a red dot was a distinctive structural feature of the mark as registered.[4]
