Rochester Community Savings Bank was a Rochester, New York-based mutual savings bank formed in 1983 through the merger of the Community Savings Bank and the Rochester Savings Bank. The institution operated under the Rochester Community Savings Bank name until it was acquired by Cleveland-based Charter One Financial in 1997 and subsequently renamed Charter One Bank, F.S.B. in 1998. [1] [2]
Design and History
The bank’s visual identity was created in 1983, the same year the institution was formed through the merger of the Community Savings Bank and the Rochester Savings Bank. [3] The logo was designed by Kathie Burgund, a graphic designer whose portfolio includes the Rochester Community Savings Bank mark. [4]
The bank also registered a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the mark “RC ROCHESTER COMMUNITY SAVINGS BANK,” filed on October 20, 1989, and registered on August 14, 1990. The registration was cancelled on September 2, 2001, following the bank’s acquisition and name change. [5]
Following the 1997 acquisition by Charter One Financial, the bank’s offices were consolidated and the Rochester Community Savings Bank name was officially retired in October 1998, when the institution adopted the Charter One Bank name as its New York Division. [2]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented symbolism for the 1983 Rochester Community Savings Bank logo is limited. The trademark registration for the “RC ROCHESTER COMMUNITY SAVINGS BANK” mark included a disclaimer for the words “ROCHESTER COMMUNITY SAVINGS BANK,” indicating that the bank did not claim exclusive rights to the name itself, only to the overall mark as presented. [5]
The bank’s advertising after the merger was handled by Perri Debes Looney & Crane, the agency that had previously promoted the Community Savings Bank. [3]
