UniCredit is a pan-European commercial banking group headquartered in Milan, Italy. Its visual identity centers on a red sphere with a white number “1” at its center, a mark the bank describes as a common graphic element used by all banks in the group to distinguish the UniCredit brand. According to UniCredit’s official brand page, the red sphere expresses dynamism, reliability and a global approach, while the white “1” represents the unique strength and leadership the group offers. The bank also states that the font used across its communications was specially designed for UniCredit, described as an energetic and modern typeface that evokes warmth and openness. [1]
Design and History
The UniCredit logo evolved from the mark of UniCredito Italiano, the Italian bank that became the foundation of the UniCredit Group. An earlier version of the logo, a red circle with a stylized “1” inside, was later transformed into a three-dimensional figure, with the circle becoming a sphere. [2]
In September 2007, UniCredit introduced a new international branding strategy built around a “masterbrand” approach. The group announced that it would adopt “UniCredit Group” as its main brand, with all European subsidiaries using the same symbol and logotype to create a unified presence across borders. [3] The strategy was presented in Milan at a cost of 75 million euros. According to Marc Beckers, then head of Group Identity and Communications, the new masterbrand strategy revolved around the red globe with the diagonal “1” and a new script, described as a modern version of the one used previously. [4] French business daily Les Echos reported at the time that the logo itself did not change, remaining a red sphere crossed by the number 1, while the typography evolved slightly. [5]
The rebranding affected UniCredit’s core markets of Italy, Germany and Austria, following earlier alignment of brands in Central and Eastern Europe. [3] In Austria, the Bank Austria brand lost its “Creditanstalt” suffix and its “red wave” logo in 2008, replaced by the UniCredit red sphere with the white “1” styled as an arrow. The new corporate color was described as “UniCredit light red.” [6] In Germany, HypoVereinsbank switched from its blue logo to the Italian group’s red. [6]
In 2018, the logo was updated to a flat design, removing the three-dimensional shading and lighting effects of the earlier version. [7]
Meaning and Symbolism
UniCredit’s official description of its logo identifies two core symbolic elements. The red sphere is the common graphical element of the UniCredit brand, expressing dynamism, reliability and a global approach. The white “1” at the center of the sphere represents the unique strength and leadership the group offers. [1] A subsidiary brand page adds that the white number 1 is inclined upwards to the right, in the direction of a growth trend. [8] A trademark registration for the UniCredit Corporate & Investment Banking mark describes the device as a spherical impression in red with the number one, inclined 45 degrees to the right in white, impressed on the sphere. [9]
Typography and Design
UniCredit states that the font used in all of its communications was designed exclusively for the bank. The bank describes the lettering as young and modern, evoking warmth and openness. [1] The 2007 masterbrand strategy introduced a new script described as a modern version of the one used previously. [4]
