TransferWise, the London-based international money transfer service founded in 2011, introduced its most significant visual identity in September 2014 with the help of London design agency venturethree. The rebrand marked a shift from start-up to grown-up for the three-year-old business, which had just received a $25 million investment and public endorsement from Sir Richard Branson. The new identity was built around the idea of “money without borders.” [1]
Design and History
The 2014 identity centered on a “fast flag” symbol, which venturethree said represented a new borderless world for money and signaled the revolutionary spirit and speed of the TransferWise service, as well as its growing global profile. The bold new brand identity was designed to stand out in a conservative industry, with fresh vibrant colours and straight-talking messaging. [2] The company said the new logo created a “sharp contrast with traditional banks and money transfer brokers.” [3]
In February 2021, TransferWise rebranded to simply “Wise.” Co-founder and CEO Kristo Käärmann explained that the name change reflected the company’s evolution beyond money transfers into a broader international account. The logo changed, but the fast flag icon remained as a symbol for money without borders, accompanied by new colours, words, and designs. [4]
On 1 March 2023, Wise rolled out a complete visual makeover developed by its internal design team in partnership with London branding agency Ragged Edge. The rebrand, rooted in the idea “The World’s Money,” saw the existing wordmark and fast flag icon subtly recrafted for better legibility. The logo was redrawn to retain the equity in the fast flag while being built for scalability. [5] [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The fast flag symbol, introduced in 2014, represented a borderless world for money and signaled the revolutionary spirit and speed of the TransferWise service. [2] When the company rebranded to Wise in 2021, the fast flag remained as a symbol for money without borders. [4]
The 2023 rebrand introduced a vibrant green as the core brand colour, replacing the blue that had become a “fintech convention.” According to Ragged Edge, the green was a symbol of both money and progress. The new identity drew from global currencies, languages, alphabets, and places around the world. [6] Wise’s director of brand and creative, Claire Grinton, said the redesign was inspired by the company’s green cash card, its global base of users, and its need to be accessible to all. The change from blue to green was also intended to help Wise stand out from its fintech peers. [7]
Typography and Design
As part of the 2023 rebrand, Ragged Edge and the Wise team created a bespoke typeface called Wise Sans. Inspired by scripts from all over the world, the typeface was designed to be instantly distinctive and truly global, with support for 960 languages. [6] The design system was intended to be one of the most accessible in the world, supporting over 146 languages. [5]
The 2023 identity also included a set of graphic “tapestries,” inspired by the world’s money, designed to be immediately recognisable in advertising and across Wise’s platforms. [8] The rebrand launched simultaneously in 175 countries. [6]
