Meaning and history

John Richmond is both the name of a British fashion designer and the label he founded. The identity shown here centers on a two-line wordmark: JOHN above RICHMOND. Its simple arrangement makes the difference in scale and lettering between the two words the main visual feature.

The wordmark and the RICH denim mark

The supplied versions show the same stacked name in contrasting presentations. In one, the lettering is light against a dark field; in the other, it is black on white. JOHN appears in smaller serif lettering above the much larger, widely spaced RICHMOND. These are visible features of the artwork, not evidence of a particular typeface or the date when the wordmark began.

The full name is not the label’s only documented identity asset. The brand traces the single-word RICH jean mark to late 2000, when Bryan Adams photographed a Richmond X lookbook, and connects it with the autumn/winter 2001 collection. The brand says RICH was chosen because “Richmond” was too long for the space, while also giving the shortened word a second meaning. Its MAKE IT RICH project later invited artists Davide Vavalà, Agata Panucci and LRP to reinterpret the mark, with a debut during Milan Fashion Week at the brand’s Via Ponte Vetero flagship (John Richmond’s RICH history; nss magazine’s project coverage).

The brand’s glam-rock and punk positioning gives the short RICH mark a different feel from the formal full-name lock-up. “Destroy, Disorientate, Disorder” has also been used as a marketing strapline; it describes the brand’s attitude rather than adding another element to the wordmark.

1982 – Today

This version places the small JOHN directly above the center of the much wider RICHMOND, in black on white. Compared with the lead image, the open white field and more widely spaced lower letters make the wordmark read as a clean, horizontal nameplate. The two images document different presentations of the name, not a verified sequence of redesigns.

The label’s early history provides context for the name: Richmond graduated from Kingston in 1982 and presented a collection under his own name that year. He formed the Richmond-Cornejo label with Maria Cornejo in 1984, then re-established his own label in 1987. The label’s lines included John Richmond, Richmond X and Richmond Denim; a separate “John by John Richmond” range was made for Debenhams in 1998 (University of Westminster archive record).

Current identity

The brand’s 2025 MAKE IT RICH project brought the RICH mark back into focus through new artist interpretations. The full-name wordmark and the shorter denim mark therefore serve as distinct parts of the identity, rather than a single mark with one fixed format. Trademark ownership is held by AM.VI S.r.l. and Quinam Ltd, following a series of disputes and judgments concerning the name (Jacobacci law firm’s account of the trademark rulings).
