The MM6 name and mark
MM6 began in 1997 as Line 6, a more accessible counterpart to the mainline. The “6” refers to the house’s numbered line system, in which numbers from 0 to 23 identify different lines; Line 6 became MM6. NSS Magazine explains the numbering system, while Wallpaper describes MM6 as an approachable offshoot. A 2012 report about the label’s first standalone store is a later retail milestone, not its launch date; FashionNetwork reported the store opening.
The artwork pairs large “MM6” lettering with the smaller “Maison Margiela” wordmark and “Paris” beneath it. The 6 is enclosed by a circle. These elements connect the label’s Line 6 name to the parent house without relying on the four-stitch label associated with Maison Margiela’s mainline identity.
MM6’s collections are attributed to an anonymous in-house studio rather than a named designer. In an interview with Hero Magazine, the team described anonymity as supporting creative freedom. Martin Margiela left the house in 2009, as reported by WWD.
???? – Today

This image shows the same MM6, Maison Margiela and Paris arrangement on a white ground, with dark lettering; the opening image shows outlined lettering against a dark ground. The contrast is visible, but it does not establish a separate redesign or a date for either treatment. The brief identifies the monochrome MM6 and Maison Margiela pairing as the current identity, with no later replacement documented. The label joined Milan Fashion Week in 2020 and introduced menswear in 2022; WWD also reported its January 2025 Pitti Uomo show.
Lettering and color
The two examples use contrasting black-and-white presentations, and both preserve the hierarchy of a prominent MM6 mark above the house name. The circled numeral makes the Line 6 connection visible, while “Maison Margiela” identifies the parent label. The available examples support describing the forms and contrast, but not assigning a specific typeface or designer.
