Counterparty (XCP) is an open-source, peer-to-peer financial platform built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain. Its native token, XCP, was created through a proof-of-burn process in early 2014, during which Bitcoin was permanently destroyed to generate the token supply. The project’s visual identity has evolved from community-driven concepts into a distinctive pink mark used across the protocol’s website, wallets, and exchange listings.
Design and History
The Counterparty logo’s origins trace back to early 2014, when community member jimhsu initiated a forum thread to explore branding ideas. In that thread, jimhsu proposed a double-arrow motif, explaining that “exchanging is the fundamental basis of counterparty, for every buyer, there’s a seller.” The concept was intended to represent the exchange process as one involving both buyers and sellers, with one design forming an X, described as “our symbol.” A globe concept was also offered, indicating the reach of the network. These early proposals were shared openly for community feedback before a professional redesign was commissioned. [1]
In March 2014, the project ran a logo design contest on 99designs. The contest brief described Counterparty as “a suite of financial tools in a protocol built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain” and noted that “Counterparty is an open-source protocol, not a company, and XCP is a currency, not a product.” The winning entry was submitted by the designer htoa, and the client, phantomphreak, praised the design as “the clear winner” with “a subliminal aspect” that was “spot on with the look and feel.” [2] [3]
Before the contest concluded, community members had already noted that the existing logo, credited to jimhsu, was being used on the Poloniex exchange. One member, NotSure, created a reworked version with added depth and darker colors, describing it as a possible temporary logo. The community response was mixed, with some praising the two curly arrows as distinctive among altcoin logos. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current Counterparty mark is an abstract symbol rendered in pink. Brand asset tracking lists the primary brand color as #EB1650, a crimson-pink tone. [5] The symbol’s abstract form derives from the exchange concept central to the protocol: the double-arrow motif was designed to show the fundamental buyer-seller dynamic of trading, and the X-shaped variant was intended to represent the exchange process itself. [1]
Typography and Design
Early design discussions referenced Gotham Bold as a font choice for the wordmark, though this was part of a community proposal rather than a confirmed final specification. [6] The logo was designed with small-size legibility in mind; community discussions emphasized that the mark needed to remain “plainly visible on 16×16” pixels for exchange listings and similar compact applications.
