NKK Switches is a Japanese manufacturer of electromechanical switches and programmable displays, founded in 1951 and incorporated in 1953 as Nihon Kaiheiki Kogyo (日本開閉器工業株式会社). The company’s current visual identity centers on a typographic wordmark that pairs the letters “NKK” with the word “SWITCHES,” a global branding concept introduced in April 2009.[1]
Design and History
In 2008, NKK Switches celebrated its 55th anniversary and set two corporate priorities: improving quality and increasing process speed. To communicate this vision worldwide, the company established a new global brand name, “NKK SWITCHES,” and updated its brand logo.[1] The new logo was introduced in April 2009, and NKK began transitioning product markings and packaging to the new brand mark starting with April 2010 production.[2]
The 2009 logo change was originally intended to accompany a full company name change at the 55th anniversary, but the name change was postponed due to costs and the impact of the Lehman Shock. Only the logo was updated at that time, with the company name change to NKK SWITCHES CO., LTD. (NKKスイッチズ株式会社) following on April 1, 2014.[3][4]
The NKK SWITCHES wordmark was registered as a trademark with the USPTO in February 2009, with registration completed in February 2010.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The NKK SWITCHES logo is a typographic wordmark in which the “N,” the vertical portions of both “K”s, and the word “SWITCHES” appear in black, while the diagonal portions of the “K”s appear in red. Black and red are claimed as features of the mark in the trademark registration.[6]
The brand concept behind the 2009 identity update was built on three pillars: a brand vision to be a “Great Small Company” that inspires customers worldwide, a brand mission to enhance lives through human-machine interface technology, and a brand value of pursuing the highest quality, technology, and speed.[1]
In 2023, to mark the group’s 70th anniversary, NKK Switches established a commemorative logo mark. The anniversary mark was designed around the concept of “tradition and future,” expressing the company’s posture of advancing step by step with reliable technology.[7]
Typography and Design
The NKK SWITCHES wordmark uses a clean, evenly weighted typographic treatment. The trademark registration describes the mark as comprising the wording “NKK SWITCHES” with the “N,” the vertical portions of both “K”s, and the word “SWITCHES” in black, and the diagonal portions of the “K”s in red.[6] The design places the brand name at the center of the identity, with the red diagonal strokes on the “K”s providing the mark’s distinctive color accent.
