Blaupunkt is a German technology brand whose visual identity centers on a single blue dot, a symbol that predates the company name itself. The mark originated in 1923 when Ideal Radiotelefon- & Apparatefabrik GmbH in Berlin began placing a blue dot on headphones that passed strict quality testing. The symbol became so popular with customers that they asked for “Blaupunkt” products, German for “blue point” or “blue dot.” The blue dot was registered as a trademark in 1924, and in 1938 the company formally adopted Blaupunkt as its name.[1][2]
Design and History
The current Blaupunkt logo is a wordmark featuring the brand name in bold, all-caps italic lettering, accompanied by the iconic blue dot to the left.[3] The blue dot functions as the brand’s core visual identifier, described by the company as “a seal of trust” that reflects its commitment to excellence.[4]
The brand’s history is closely tied to its ownership changes. Robert Bosch GmbH acquired the company in 1930 and held the Blaupunkt trademark for nearly eight decades.[5] In 2008-2009, Bosch sold the trademark to Aurelius Group of Munich.[1] Since 2022, the trademark has been held by Talisman Brands (Luxembourg) S.à r.l., an affiliate of the global brand licensing company Established. Inc.[6]
Since 2009, the brand has operated through a global licensing program, with more than 50 licensed partners developing and selling Blaupunkt products across over 90 countries.[2][1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The blue dot’s meaning is directly documented by the brand itself. It began as a quality-control seal placed on headphones that passed testing, and it quickly became a symbol of outstanding quality among consumers.[7] The company describes the blue dot as “more than a name; it’s a seal of trust that reflects our commitment to excellence in everything we do since the beginning.”[4]
Typography and Design
Blaupunkt’s official packaging style guide specifies the brand’s blue color as Pantone 7462 C with CMYK values of C100/M50/Y20/K30.[8] The style guide also references the use of the Myriad Pro typeface in Regular and Bold weights for packaging applications.[9]
