Rubycon Corporation is a Japanese electronics manufacturer specializing in aluminum electrolytic capacitors, film capacitors and power supply units. The company was founded in April 1952 in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture, and adopted the Rubycon trademark in April 1953, shortly after changing its corporate name from Nihon Denkai Seisakusho to Shin-ei Tsushin Kogyo.[1]
Design and History
The Rubycon wordmark is a horizontal lockup that pairs the company name in a clean, sans-serif style with a small graphic emblem. The mark is registered as a trademark in multiple jurisdictions, including Taiwan, where it was filed in 2013 as a plain (monochrome) mark.[2] A separate graphic-only trademark registration also exists for Rubycon Corporation, filed as a monochrome planar mark.[3]
The company changed its corporate name to Rubycon Corporation in December 1990, aligning the company name with the trademark that had been in use since 1953.[1] The wordmark itself has remained a consistent element of the brand across product packaging, datasheets and corporate communications.
Meaning and Symbolism
The Rubycon name derives from “ruby,” a reference to the red gemstone, and the company is widely known in Chinese-language markets as “红宝石” (hongbaoshi), meaning “ruby.”[4] The brand name is also commonly printed on the side of the company’s electrolytic capacitors, where it serves as a product identification mark.[4]
Typography and Design
The Rubycon wordmark uses a straightforward, unadorned sans-serif letterform. The company’s official SVG logo file, hosted on Wikimedia Commons, measures 463 by 120 pixels and presents the wordmark in a horizontal format.[5] No official documentation of specific brand colors, a custom typeface or a designer attribution for the current mark has been published by the company.
