Acergy S.A. was an international offshore seabed-to-surface engineering and construction company, previously known as Stolt Offshore and Stolt Comex Seaway, that operated until merging with Subsea 7 in January 2011. The Acergy brand was created in 2006 when the company demerged from the Stolt-Nielsen Group, and the visual identity was designed by the London-based agency BergHind Joseph (now Smith Joseph).
Design and History
The Acergy identity was born from a corporate rebranding. Following a general meeting in April 2006, Stolt Offshore announced that the company’s name would be changed to Acergy S.A., effective April 10, 2006.[1] The Stolt-Nielsen Group had sold its ownership in the company in 2005, listing it on the Oslo Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, which set the stage for a new independent identity.[2]
BergHind Joseph was tasked with creating a fresh brand name, a global logo, and a comprehensive suite of marketing materials for the demerged company.[3] The agency’s research into sea mythology, sea creatures, and energy-related words generated almost 200 name options before the client approved “Acergy.” The name combines “ace” (meaning sharp) and “-rgy” (from the word “energy”), suggesting excellence in serving the energy industry, with a connotation of oil “ascending” to the sea surface.[3]
The agency also created a concise strapline, “seabed-to-surface,” to help stakeholders grasp instantly what Acergy did.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo design focused on Acergy’s core strength: extraordinary engineering. According to the designers, sharp edges were used to retain a masculine, engineering brand personality.[3] The brand needed to work across a wide variety of environments and scales, from the hulls of a fleet of vast ships to corporate stationery, on-site signage, and websites.[3]
Typography and Design
A distinctive look and feel for the company’s collaterals was crafted using dramatic images of the sea and a limited colour palette of red, black and grey. Each design element was intended to tell the story of Acergy’s harsh but fascinating working environment.[3]
In January 2011, Acergy S.A. merged with Subsea 7, Inc. to form Subsea 7 S.A., ending the Acergy brand.[2]
