Syncrude Canada Ltd. is a major producer of synthetic crude oil from Canada’s oil sands, headquartered in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The company was established in 1964 as a joint venture between several major oil companies.[1] Since 2016, Syncrude has been operated by Suncor Energy, which holds a majority interest in the joint venture.[2]
Design and History
The Syncrude logo is described in Suncor’s official brand guidelines as “distinctly Canadian” and a key brand asset that communicates Syncrude’s strength and position.[3] The primary logo consists of the Syncrude wordmark paired with the descriptor “Operated by Suncor” beneath it.[3]
The brand guidelines specify that the logo is available in Syncrude Red and Black colorways, with overlays to be done using Syncrude Red.[4] The guidelines also establish a clear space rule for the logo, defined as equal to the height of the letter “y” in the Syncrude wordmark.[4]
Historical Syncrude branding included a maple leaf motif. Vintage Syncrude merchandise, such as lapel pins, featured a gold-tone Canada maple leaf design.[5] The maple leaf connection is consistent with the official description of the logo as “distinctly Canadian.”[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Suncor’s brand guidelines describe the Syncrude logo as “distinctly Canadian,” a characterization that ties the identity to its national origin.[3] The guidelines further state that the logo has become a key brand asset communicating Syncrude’s strength and position.[3]
Typography and Design
The Syncrude logo is a typographic wordmark, with the brand name as the central element. The official guidelines specify that no element of the Syncrude wordmark should blend into the background, and that program names added beneath the logo should be separated from the wordmark by a 0.5 pt horizontal rule.[6] The logo is produced as a vector-based design, available in formats suitable for print and digital applications.[7]
