Sevan Marine ASA was a Norwegian offshore technology and engineering company known for designing floating production, storage and offloading units (FPSOs) and drilling rigs. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Arendal, the company specialized in cylindrical hull designs for offshore applications.[1] The Sevan Marine name ceased to exist in October 2018, when the company was renamed Magnora ASA following the sale of its FPSO and gas design businesses to Singapore’s Sembcorp Marine.[2]
Design and History
Sevan Marine’s visual identity was tied to its signature engineering innovation: the cylindrical Sevan hull, a circular, symmetrical floating design developed in 2001 as a cost-efficient alternative to traditional ship-shaped and semi-submersible platforms.[3] The company’s logo featured an abstract symbol rendered in navy and gray, with the brand name set alongside it. The navy palette was a defining element of the identity, providing visual continuity across the company’s print and digital applications.
The Sevan Marine mark was used until the October 2018 rebranding to Magnora ASA, after which the company adopted a new identity reflecting its shift toward renewable energy development.[4] The former Sevan Marine design and technology business continued under the Sevan SSP name, later becoming Sevan Deepwater Technology, a subsidiary of Seatrium, which retains the cylindrical hull heritage.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The abstract symbol in the Sevan Marine logo did not use literal representation. Instead, the mark’s circular form echoed the company’s cylindrical hull design, which was its defining technological contribution to the offshore industry.[3] The navy and gray color scheme was consistently applied across the brand’s materials, though no official documentation of specific color values or their intended symbolism has been published.
